Initialisation problem

AAAAgh! I can't get started. I have the same error message that everyone else probably gets but I just can't solve it. I have Windows 2000 Professional but can not find any firewall. I've looked in the control panel and I've done searches, but no firewall. I know there must be one somewhere because it showed up on a previos verion of limewire. Can anyone help.

Details of system

I have Window 200 professional. As far as I know I have a Windows firewall which I can't locate anywhere. I have 512mb of ram and about 60gb of free hard drive space. I connect via an ethernet cable into a adls router and connect from home. The limewire version is 4.14.10 which I have just bought and downloaded and I run Java 6. My ISP is BT Broardband. I've run the test and it came back ok. I don't share my computer but there 2 other computer connected to the router wielessly. This a new problem, only happened when trying to initialise the new version of LW. I could always see the firewall over the blue world when I used my old version but I haven't been able see the new version yet. My modem works via an ethernet cable and I have Bitdefender antivirus which doesn't have an active firewall. I live in U.K.

I hope this is enought info for you to be able to help me.
Many thanks. old slowhand

Windows 2000 does not have a software firewall by default like XP does. Most likely the problem is your wireless device. Most wireless devices have internal NAT firewalls which is why it is imperative we know those details. ;)

It may even be worth downgading your java. But more about that later after we get more details. Some people have problems with java 1.6 & downgrading to the 2nd last java 1.5 release often fixes their problem.

Firewall

I've been through my router where the firewall settings are. I've checked the usual places and I can't find that either. What more information would you like from me?

If you turn your modem/router upside down it will tell you the make and model number for it...

In the meantime try this....
Try uninstalling all versions of Java from the add/remove programs and then re-install the JRE 5.11 offline version....
Archive: Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Update 11

If that does not help with your problem try deleting your preference folder/s...This will reset your configurations back to default and get rid of any corruption that may of happened...;)
Fixes for Limewire when LW isn't operating as it should

Preferences

Ok, I've downloaded and installed the Java - no different. I've been to limewire folder and right clicked and there's no facility for me to change the preferences. I went through all the advanced options and nothing.

For LW 4.10 or later: Delete the LW Preferences folder called limewire (whilst LW is closed!) found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\*yourusername*\Application Data\limewire

Note: The Application Data folder is HIDDEN. In order to find & access it, you'll need to turn on the show hidden files & folders option. See sample below. New users of LW will find their preferences here. For those who have updated from an earlier version to 4.10 or later, you will find your preferences here after having deleted your preferences in the previous location discussed in Step 2 in the post at top of page!

Please re-visit the link I gave you it has all the instructions on deleting the preference folder/s...
