i was happily using LW today and had a message saying that a newer version was available and it was recommended i upgraded. I followed official link and downloaded upgrade which had missing files and wouldn't install - but it had already deleted my working version. I cannot now get a working version of basic anywhere - each version available has the same missing bits. HELP

I would just start from scratch. Not sure what OS you are using, so if XP then go to Start > All Programs > LW > Uninstall.

Now once uninstalled, go back to Start > Search > type in limewire and search All Files and Folders.

Now if search finds anything LW related Delete Everything that It finds. Now Download Crap Cleaner which will clean your Registry and also clean a ton of Junk from your system.

Now Remove All Java versions installed (via Add/Remove Programs) before you install the latest Version. (Download the JRE Offline Installer)
Java SE Downloads Fifth one down.

Once you have installed the Latest Version of Java, Now you can Download Limewire fresh and clean.
