whats a good video file type

When ever you look up an audio file on limewire almost all files are mp3. That file type seems to be the standard for audio files. I was just wondering what the standard video file is. I see avi and mpg on there and dont know which one is better or the standard. also, do video files have id3 tags just like mp3 files? thanks

Best filetypes you will find on Limewire are avi and mkv. But don't let just the extension guide you, as an e.g avi is just a container (Audio Video Interleave) can be lots of things (DivX, XviD etc.) and same goes for sound in the file, which could be anything from low quality mp3 to untouched 6 channel AC3. Same goes for MKV, which is normally h.264 codec with either AC3 or ACC sound.

Other could be MP4, which also contain e.g. h.264 video codec and ACC sound.

H.264 is the best 'lossy' format around nowadays. Movie download issues (click on blue link)

In my tests using H.264, it far surpasses DivX, but that's a personal opinion (unless of course I provide file sizes examples, data rate & res details, snapshot examples, etc. of quality). Though I guess the limitations of DivX are obvious to those who have converted files to both DivXPro & H.264 before.

As Sleepless pointed out .. both AVI & Quicktime's .mov can be 'Containors' which may contain one of many video & audio formats within.

I don't think you can find h.264 extension on Gnutella, but rather .mkv or mp4 can have them. h.264 is just the codec for video and a video without sound is no fun at all.

remember to right click on search results and choose bitzi lookup...

.mp4 can represent MPeg 4 or H.264. Either are very good formats. _ (H.264 is an advanced version of MPeg 4)
QuickTime's standard extension for Mpeg 4 is .mp4

bitzi lookup even on mp3s?
