New java version needed for Limewire??? Why is Limewire Beta 5.011 telling me I have to update to a newer version (1.6 I think) of java? I just bought my MacBook today so I find it odd that the OS version on a brand new MacBook doesn't have the required goods to run any application... What am I missing??? |
LW 5 is built on Java 1.6. The only OSX computers that can thus run LW 5 are the intel macs with 64-bit abilities for 64-bit Java 1.6 To be honest, if you do not have an intel mac, I do not believe you are missing anything. LW 5 looks totally different & I'm not exactly wrapped about the way it works. It's designed for dumbies who know nothing about p2p sharing, especially those who barely know how to turn a computer on. They've taken all the advanced features out. If you do have an intel MacBook, then do a software update. Go to Java preferences found in your utilities folder & move Java 6 up the heirarchy to 1st or 2nd. Setting up Java for Leopard |
I cannot connect because of a firewall. How can I fix this? |
Cannot what? Cannot install LW 5? This thread topic is about a MacBook unable to use LW Beta 5 due to different version of Java. I hope your problem is same topic, else create a new thread. ;) |
When I open LW it tells me I am behind a firewall. I disabled the firewall and LW still will not connect. Not sure what to do next? |
Firewall & connection problem, a different topic. :nono: At this point, the best I can advise is you supply these details: System details - help us to help you (click on blue link) as described in the forum rules. lol :D We cannot help much with connection problems without those details. However, you can in the meantime try these suggestions: If LW Will Not Connect (click on the blue link) |
LW 5 won't run on OS X Tiger Quote:
So I'm screwed. There's no way to run LW 5 on this Mac. How do I get back to the old LW? Why is there no warning to the 2 million or so PPC users that they're about to nuke their LW capability? Geez. |
You can revert back to 4.18.8... there's info about downloading the older version for both basic & Pro users here: LimeWire 5 is only compatible with intel computers running Leopard OSX 10.5 or later Looks like LW have now updated their download pages (Pro page shows the same) to provide info about which Macs can run LW 5:) http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/a.../LW5forMac.jpg |

http://kimhill.com/links/lime.jpg ...and the LW5 DL starts automatically. You install it, and you've nuked LW. Quote:
Why doesn't the LW5 installer check for the required system before nuking me? This is a basic installer function. The Limewire guys need to wake up. Now I'm hosed- what next? |
lol @ the timing. I answered your question a minute before you even posted back. Birdy already posted you what the download page looks like. I get the feeling you do not even read responses in this thread. I'm outta this thread; unsubscribing to spend time with members who actually 'read'. Good luck! |

I appreciated your earlier help, but your attitude negates it now. Let's recap the LW installation process, as it might stand for a couple million PPC users: 1) Go to limewire.com 2) Click DL link 3) Install from the DLed disk image 4) Launch LW5 and see that it fails 5) Plus- your old Limewire installation is nuked 6) Search on Google 7) Find Gnutella forums 8) Register for Gnutella forums 9) Post question 10) Get advice from helpful person, which unfortunately fails, too 11) Wait overnight for further advice 12) Remove receipt file from obscure directory 13) Catch attitude on the forum Not impressed. |
And BEFORE you get to the download page, you select which you want, pro or Basic. Once selected you get to the page Birdy showed. Or didn't you even get that far. ciao my last reply to 'you' I told you what to do & you are STILL COMPLAINING like someone who wants to FLAME the people here who 'do' give others help. Go back & read Post #9 Did you forget to read that ! It tells you exactly what to do. WHat's more it's the same advice I've given many times over past few weeks. Did you consider that each question gets answered many times on the forums. We have a search button for members to find answers easily. Some are simply too lazy & think their self important issues demand personal attention. Whatever LW.org does is their business. I contacted them to get them to put more information on the page for Mac users. WHich they have done in limited fashion. I'm still waiting for more notifications. |

The screen I posted earlier is the only thing you see after clicking the non-pro DL link on the limewire.com homepage. Quote:

(Oh & the Older Versions link is to the right side of the page, which Birdy's image doesn't show. But this one does: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/mac-os...0-5-later.html.) Have a great day Kim777 :) |

Here's the whole screen from limewire.com (not .org): http://kimhill.com/links/lime2.jpg Nothing is left out. |
Lime Wire » Download LimeWire :) Press Get Basic button |
If you go to the limewire.com homepage & click on the big, non-pro DL link, you will never see that screen. |
1 Attachment(s) It does when I click the Get Basic button. I am using Safari. :) Firefox seems to look same too. |
You're displaying: Lime Wire » Download LimeWire I never see that URL. From the LW homepage, my Safari links directly to: Lime Wire » Thank You for Downloading LimeWire There is *no* warning there about versions there (I posted the screenshot earlier). Regardless- the fact that the LW OS X installer doesn't even try to look at the OS version is inexcusable. |
Not sure how you got that link, however that's not the default download link people go to when they go to the LW download page. The default page is the first one shown in the image I posted. Start from the beginning. Go to the LW download page as given in links I posted earlier. LW.org cannot be blamed if other sites or people bookmark the direct download link. I posted the /download/version link earlier but still forces users back to the default page. The link you gave is specifically OSX, namely /download/download.php?version=osx so someone has either directly posted that link on their site or bookmarked it. The old version 4.18 is /download/download.php?version=last_osx |
Sorry, but that *is* the default download link on the homepage. ("Download LimeWire") At least it's the homepage that I'm presented by Safari. If they're doing funky re-directs, you may see something different. But that is the *default* homepage DL link that I'm presented by Safari. |
How did you find this link? Did you google it or ... ? Google 'might' have given a direct link. I think Google is a highly irresponsible company for many reasons, including allowing spammers to advertise through their services. Money talks in fine language with google. |

1 Attachment(s) yes you are right. First time I've seen that happen at LW. Still has a warning at bottom-right for OSX users on that first page before you click on the Download LimeWire link. ;) But I will have a word with them again to nag them. See if they can make any changes. :) |
