![]() Hi Everyone, I am trying to help a friend with problems connecting Limewire and have asked him to run the test ( http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ ) and it worked. Can someone tell me what this means, i.e. if some things are OK and do not need further investigation, it will help me in looking at those areas which are more likely to be where the problem lies! What is the current consensus regarding the best version of Java? I have read many posts here and the various versions mentioned all seem to be quite old. Is there a particular 'recent' version that is considered more suited to Limewire than others? My friend is in US and I am in Australia so it is not so easy but I am waiting for the details of his system as detailed in Provide these details when you post!!! so that if I need further help I will at least have some basic information. Thanks, Roger. |

![]() That test simply means their port 6346 is open for sending outward messages. However does not mean the port is open for receiving inward messages (that we don't know yet). ![]() Yes, as many details as possible. Otherwise it's difficult to ascertain what the problem might be. ![]() Depends on version of LW they are using. Java 6 is required for LW 5. 64-bit java best in that case. For other versions of LW 4, it depends on their set up. One version of java sometimes runs better on some people's system than others. Java 1.5_10 I think was the best of the Java 5 versions. Not sure about Java 6 (though have heard of some problems with Java 6, possibly related to particular Java 6 release version). For connection problems, this is generally the best place to start: If LW Will Not Connect (click on the blue link) If they upgraded from LW 4 -> 5, then deletion of LW preferences folder might help greatly. ![]() |

![]() Hi LOTR, Wow!! that was a mighty quick reply. I am very gratefiul, thanks. I will check the versions of Java and LW and go from there. My friend was using Limewire earlier in the year and to my knowledge nothing has been changed on his system (I will double check anyway) but after a spell not using it, since he has returned to LM, it has been failing to connect ever since! I'll get back when I know more, but thanks again, Roger |

![]() Hi LOTR, Thanks for your continued interest in this problem. I got this message from Ken: "nothing comes up when doing a search for gnutella.net file." (Versions used are LW 5.0.11, Java 1.6.0_11) Could it be that because he has uninstalled and reinstalled Limewire, this file has already been deleted, or did his search simply fail to find the file? Can you tell me where the file would normally be? Thanks, Roger |

![]() If your friend (or you) click on this link: If LW Will Not Connect (click on the blue link) you'll find detailed instructions for finding the file on XP & a couple of links to help on Vista. He'll need to make sure that he's showing hidden files & folders on his computer - the file lives within a folder that's hidden by deault. For 5.0.11, he should only need to delete the file rather than replace it ![]() |

![]() Hi Birdy, Thanks so much for the reply and I am sorry to have been so stupid. I recall reading in a post while searching for answers about ensuring that hidden folders are made visible but of course I forgot when the time came! I will pass this on to Ken and get back to the forum with a result, Thanks again, Roger |
