Default Easy question... (does LW include bundled software?)

All versions I've seen of LimeWire in the past contained "bundled software", i.e. malware. I just removed it from my son's PC a week ago and found LOTS of bad stuff it left behind. Luckily for him, I'm an expert at computers (I repair as a side-business) and found it easy to clean-up. I was pretty upset as he knows better (he's 22), but I let him slide and offered up BearShare Lite. Sadly, my old BS version isn't working anymore and that's how I found this forum. Looks I have some studying to do!

What's the deal with LW today? Why are so many people using it with the included malware? I absolutely lothe malware!

Hi BadThad,

Might need to brush up a bit on your P2P Programs. Limewire is NOT bundled with anything.
On the other hand, the Gnutella Network is absolutly infested with Maleware, Viruses, Corrupt and Fake Files. It's open to any one and anything. The trick is learning what to look out for. There is a ton of info on this subject here in the forums.
I don't really think it matters what P2P program you use if it connects to the Gnutella Network. It's just a matter of doing a little research and ALWAYS scan Every file you download off the network.
Some of us have used several Gnutella based programs and have had little adverse reaction. Read, Read, and Read some more.
Hope this Helps.

To Add: The ONLY site to get Limewire is www.limewire.com

And just to add to what Remoc said... years ago, LW used to come with bundled software (LimeShop).

This was removed as of version 3.9.4 (April 2004).

Thanks for the responses. WOW, I guess I should have looked at their website first! I need to go over his machine more often. He picked up that malware someplace.

How is it that they are still up and running? The legal pressure put on Napster, BearShare, etc. was tremendous.

Default Youngsters that should know better

BadThad

I have a son older than yours, he also should know better, when it comes to downloading or picking up dodgy stuff, yet from time to time he does something that kills off his PC or laptop.

In addition, colleagues that I work with also complain that their adult children, who also should know better, either download malware to their PCs or go from relative to relative downloading and killing PCs in their wake.

Young adults are notorious for doing things they know they should not do.

As for Limewire and the others still running, well files sharing is not illegal, e.g. using LW to share your holiday photos with your friends and neighbours. Therefore, you can share anything that you own (and own the copyright for). However, in general (and depending on the laws of your country), sharing copyright material is illegal, such as tracks from your CD or scanned photos from a magazine.

At age 57, owner of pc's since '85, I too should know better. Had to do a sys restore a few weeks ago.

Reminds me of being age 5 and saying, "I'm not gonna spill it". That's how I acquired my janitorial skills.

Whenever my pc is working just as it should, it starts to bore me. As Major Geeks sez, "Geek it 'til it megahertz."

Default Boredom = Good

Blackhorse 70V

You know, we are in the same age group but I like my PC to be "boring" because that means it is working and doing what I want it to do.

That is why I keep all "young adults" away from my PC, by having a password that only I know, and running my battery of anti-spyware apps, anti-virus and PC utilities.

Therefore, for me, PC boredom = good, well behaved and working PC.
