Resuming downloads
 

Hi, I'm new to Gnotella. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to resume incomplete downloads? I have a large file that is nearly complete (my ISP unplugged me after 4 hours!) and rather than download it all over again, I'd like to just complete it. I should say that it is no longer in my download queue so I can't resume that way. There must be a way!! Thanx.

I too have a problem with large downloads.

My ISP allows me on the net for nothing, ie no telephone charges. Unfortunately It cuts me off after two hours, therfore buggering up any large file downloads. I know that there is file share clients which start a download from where it left off, but Gnutella has a problem with this and starts the file at the beginning. New to Gnotella and hope that it will resume downloads from where I left off.

BearShare will let you resume donwloads. Just start downloading the same file again and it will resume where you left off. If someone renamed the file on you but the name is close and the size is the same so you know that it is the same file just rename your file to the new name and then resume with work again.

Some lame Gnutella clients can't resume. Also Limewire has a bug that won't let people resume from them no matter what client you are using.

In BearShare you can see what clients people are using, so then you can resume the file from a non-Limewire client.

You are wrong about LimeWire. Indeed it was Bearshare who had a bug that let noone resume files from LimeWire. This was because older Bearshare versions did not comply to the strict HTTP naming conventions and therefore were not able to connect to LimeWire users properly.

Resume with Phex

Other clients like Phex are also able to resume downloads. The special thing with Phex is that automaticly search for new download candidates with the same file. The filename has not to be equal you can specify any search term yourself. Once a file matches it will add the download candidate. This way you can let your client run for days without maintenance and it will try to find hosts and starts downloads until you have the comlete file.

There actually is a way to resume a large file (or a file of any size) without having to dl other programs. Though it's a bit *tedious* to do so.

First, re-find the file and start downloading it. Once it has started, immediately abort it and close Gnotella.

Go to your Temp folder in the Gnotella folder and find the file which is the newly-started one (check it's file size to know the difference between the new and the old).

Copy the name of the new file, delete the new file, then paste the name over the old file.

Reopen Gnotella and hope that the file from the host is still available. If it is, it'll try to Request it and resume it from where you last left off.

It sounds like a lot of work, and it probably is. But at times it can be a great time saver in the long run.

Most resume now
 

Most new versions of all the clients resume now. Gnuc and all the major ones, most anything that has been updated in the last 3 months works fine.
