Default Still No Connections?

Those hosts/connections have been gone for too long, now. I've tried everything that is advised everywhere on the Net, with pointers (about Gnotella and LimeWire) that come from very qualified people. No joy; still the twittering single line, still the word "Connecting..." and still no connections, no matter how long I try.

Am I the only one, I wonder, who dreads the concept of returning to further episodes of the "Remotely Queued Transfer Error Show", otherwise known as Napster. Just as Napster appears to be dying, and we need Gnotella, etc., more than ever, along come these apparently unresolved, still largely unexplained failures to connect.

Somewhere, I heard that I should go to...

...and I'll find the answers, there. When I got there, I saw...

"it's all okay.

today: 28,756
total: 7,306,876"

[ I won't pretend TOTAL understanding what that means, being new to the Net, but it looks like a self-patting on the back and an unfounded reassurance given to those visiting the Gnutella site. ]

Does it appear to anybody else that there is something nobody is telling them, at Gnutella.com? ...like, for example, that, while they are celebrating with enigmatic digits, there is a trivial point not beind addressed by them, like that...OUR FILE TRANSFER SOFTWARES ARE NO LONGER TRANSFERRING FILES?

Have you tried to connect manually to gnutellahosts.cache.com:6346 ???
This host server is usually always up, even if the other 2 are down.

Make sure your firewall doesn't block the port you run your Gnotella on and try to watch if any data goes out from your computer (sometimes you have those tiny little monitor icons in the system try down the right bottom. They flash on in or out data).

Something seems to be wrong in your setup and no data is going in and/or out.

You may also find, that if you share NO files, nobody else wants you to connect to them.

And make sure you keep at least one incoming conection set.

The gnutella net works very, very good now.

And the 28,000 is actually a bit low. It is sometimes over 50,000 users at any one time.

Default THANKS GO TO JD...

Okay...JD:

Your advice was not just constructive - it solved the problem, completely, although the actual numbered port, mentioned, was itself left unmolested. Norton can be moody, at times.

I uninstalled Black Ice Defender and Norton Personal Firewall and got on first time, EVERY try of many. It was obviously, as you thought, a firewall problem.

I reinstalled Black Ice Defender and reset its options exactly as they had been and I still got on Gnotella, perfectly.

So, to be certain, I completely removed every trace of NORTON from the Registry and just reinstalled it. This time I DIDN'T SELECT NORTON'S AUTOCONFIGURE OFFER DURING THE ACTUAL INSTALL STAGE (something I'd selected only 2 weeks ago during another re-install!) AND JUST SET IT UP TO HANDLE GNOTELLA IN THE OLD WAY.

PERFECT CONNECTIONS, EVERY TIME. Thanks for the advice. I put this follow-up here in the hope that others may benefit from your advice.

TO JD: Thanks for saving me from the jaws of almost certain Napster.

Ian.

Glad it works for you now.

I decided against Norton along time ago.
The guy Norton made excellent programs.
Once his company was purchased it became a completely different story.
The nowadays Norton products I have tried, take over some functions, one didn't choose nor does not know initially.

And - it is sometimes VERY difficult to un-install it 'completely' again.

I find the Gnutella Net has improved dramtically over the last few months and amazing what people share now on it.
And the clients get better and better too.
Make sure you try also the latest Gnucleus 1.3.3.

Have lots of fun!....

Default Right About Gnucleus...

JD: You were right about Gnucleus- downloaded, tried and tested and it's great.

Between Gnotella, LimeWire and Gnucleus, it's gonna be a nice Summer...of music and pictures of, er....Catherine Zeta Jones, Liz Hurley, Yancy Butler, Catherine Zeta Jones, Sophie Marceux...oh, and er... Catherine Zeta Jones...yep-yep-yep!

I have "Zone Alarm Pro", "Norton Personal Firewall" and "Black Ice Defender", now, often running all of the time. ZAP gets a little kicky, now and then, but I recommend all three to folks on these Nets.

By the way, JD...

I NOTICE YOU SAY THAT YOU LIVE ON EARTH!? REALLY? ME, TOO! IT'S BEEN SOME WEEK FULL OF COINCIDENCES FOR ME, THIS HAS!

Have fun! Good luck, everyfolk...

I wonder...would anybody believe me if I told them that I didn't send that message twice? Weird things are going on, here. I love it!

Smile It's important to feel happy once in a while!! Yet how rare

Hey 'Godsplinter',
I am happy it workes out good for you and you have found new toys to play with! Same here, it's lots of fun, isn't it?

New age, new discoveries, new ways of satisfying the ever thirsty human mind.

You seem to be into firewalls, hahaha, 3 at the same time.

I think you can give Blackice defender the slip. It looks and works nice, but is not doing much!?

Zonealarm is very good, but if you feel adventuress get atguard (it is on the gnutella net too), V3.22.11, which was the last version done.
It is already a few years old, and no longer updated.
But the only one I use. And it is GOOD!
And if you google search, you can find a few nice atguard utilites, like an alarm you can set on certain things, and lots more.
It gives just about total control on ICMP, UDP, TCP, Cookies, Java applets and more. Comes with great help screens too.
Others who read this may find this information quite usefull!

Try http://grc.com and test all your firewalls.
They run the best site to see which of your ports are open, closed or STEALTH, - the last one is what you want, for all!
ATGuard does that.

Wrong forum for all this, but hey - sharing is the basic principle of the gnutella net.
