Users kill Gnotella.....

I swear, I have had Gnotella for a month now and I am on it waaaay too long in the hopes that someone with the files I am after will become available. And when they do, guess what, they cancel my d/l 5 minutes after it starts. I have no problem d/ling normal file sizes such as 1 or 2 megs, but anything over 100 megs, *like movies* get canceled by the user as soon as they start. What is with you people. If you don't want people to d/l them, don't share them, and if you don't want to share them, go somewhere else! God I wish Gnotella had an instant messge feature like Jblurb or Napster. Too many freeloaders!

Cancelling uploads can have lots of reasons.
I have cancelled uploads on a few occasions myself, because I have my PC in my bedroom, and it makes far too much noise for me to be able to have it on all night.

So if I'm downloading a small file late in the evening, or have downloaded a file for some time and it's about to finish at such a late hour, and someone is beginning an upload from me, which will take him like 6 hours to complete on his 56K modem, I just have to cancel him.

Another reason is buggy software -- I use Limewire, which sometimes just decides to quit on my OSX Mac. It's done that to me at 90 percent of a 222 MB Futurama download several times -- frustrating me and whoever was downloading from me, too!

Nevertheless, it's been working reasonably well -- only 4 more futuramas to go to complete my set :)

I Cut Folks Off, Too...

I often have to cut folks off, but always for genuine good reason and not spite.

I never cut off someone who has a good chance of getting their file from me. I am on a 56K Modem and my ISP (BTInternet, UK) cuts me off at the 2 hours mark. That makes me a pretty bad performer and of less than average use to other sharers and I am very conscious of that.

Should I see someone starting what will be, for example, a guaranteed 40+ minutes download and I know my ISP will chop across it at the 10 minutes mark, I chop first...because I want the person to HAVE A CHANCE TO START A LITTLE EARLIER at getting their desired file/s elsewhere.

I hate doing it - I put files down here for others to have! I wish I had a message system through which to send a sincere apology or warning (as I used to with Napster) when I feel I should cut people off, because - as "JD" might say...that's very much aligned with the spirit of file sharing.

I have been just as angry as you appear to be, and for what seems to have been the same reason.

Maybe we'll be given a messaging system in some future version, to aid in lessening the bitterness that occurs to another when a break is forced with no apology or explanation.

I wish you plenty of luck with future downloads; I really do! It's a genuine concern for all sharers.

I cancel sometimes too...

for several reasons
1) My parents make me get off at midnight, so sometimes i cancel so i can get my d/l finished in time.
2) My sister uses P2P too, so there are some BAD files in my shared folder that i kill uploads every chance i get. Boy Bands dont deserve to get shared.
3) My DSL line has a security function that only allows it to be connected 2 hours at a time, to make it less vulnerable. so it might be just then when i gotta disconnect.
