This will be obvious to everyone experienced, but make sure you're connected. When I was new, I just tried searching right of the bat without connecting, too. Also, if you have more than a terabyte of data and you still don't get results, instead of searching for, say, 'The Band-The Song' try 'The Band' or 'The Song'.
