Well, skinning has kind of fallen in priority lately. Priority #1 for the next release is stability. Maybe a background image could be added with little effort, but don't count on it. I'm very excited about the next release, which will be 0.7, because I think the majority of users just want a stable client, whether it supports background images or not. (Don't read that as a flame.)
