Fruitless Searches

When I enter a search string, version 0.73 (which I assume is the latest version) will simply tell me it is searching and idle out into infinity without ever displaying a result. Any help you can offer on this would be appreciated

Did you connect to a host cache (i.e gnutellahosts.com:6346) first?

Sorry - pressed enter too quick!

yes, I have connected to a host server. It shows me having 144 odd hosts a few billion files and 7.4 odd Tb of info. However, I simply see no search results. I just see a searching status field at the bottom of the search page and an empty results field

Ahhh, interesting, I seem to have the same problem.
I connect to ca 6 out and get good connects w minimum drops. Shows lots of stuff on network BUT
when I search for mp3 or avi I just get an idle searching...forever which doesn't turn up anything. It has 1 or twice but usually nada even if Monitor shows loads of hits for mp3 or avi.
Heck I can't even find my own shared stuff...Hehe

Is there any way to choose servers close by w good pings to tighten up the network? I ideally should find some in Sweden or Germany.
Most are deadend-leechers w modems...don't mind but they don't add to the networking.

Another Q: What does Hops really signify? Most report 2-4 hops but Traceroute is usually round 13...hmmm

Cheers Horza

Try to get more hosts in the host list and sort them by number of shared files (or MB) and try to connect to these new hosts until you get results. Don't connect to too many servers, a max of four or five (in and out!) and no more, otherwise your system won't handle it for long!

OK,
I'm on a 10Mbps line Lan and I'm running ZoneAlarm. W granted privileges for Gnotella fully.
I ran 6 out and 2 in before and I seemed to find loads just as I started it up and after a minute or so its "Fruitless search" again..
Is it some sort of buffering problem?

I connect to Gnutellahosts.com

I already sorted on Mb and on Files to begin w those High ones.

Btw why does it list the TTL for each server, that isn't very interesting? And do you know what Hops REALLY stands for?
I get a feeling that the Pings to Gnuhosts.com:s servers are too high 200ish from Sweden and that might cause the problem. What's your take?

One of the problems is that most of the people who connect to Gnutella are "leeches" i.e. they don't share any files themselves, you can check that for your self, by looking at your host cache and noting how many people have 0 files shared.

It comes down to "give a little, get a little", I wish people would realize this,
whats the point in touting about a point to point sharing protocol if no one is "sharing" anything.

Another problem that's more technical, is that your searches are very sensitive to your "My TTL" setting, try setting it at 1 and repeat your searches, and then 2,3 etc. and see the difference, both in the number of returns you'll get, and in the time it takes to show your searches. the original Gnutella was better at this, because it displayed results as soon as it got a reply. Gnotella appears to wait for all returns before displaying the results

I understand the hair pulling on this topic. I finally get the program to work and now the searches dont ever finish! I'm hoping that someone can help me, im a cable user and have well over 200 files shared on average and dont even see mine when searching from a networked pc.. I do not have a firewall. Please help!
