Installation terminates with System Error

I tried to install Gnotella 0.9.8 on my Win 98 SE (German) system. After unpacking the ZIP archive and running the installation EXE, I get the "copying files" message, but then the installation terminates abruptly with a

System Error &H80004005

What is wrong?
