Gnotella Wishlist Topic !?! Post all your wishes for the next version of Gnotella in this Topic, so the author can easily get an compact view to it !! |
It would be cool, if there is an option to exclude ,,freeloaders" from downloading in the gnutella Network. It would also be great if you could sort the tabs in the download window by clicking on them |
compress the main exe of gnotella with upx. the files size will shrink from 2 mb to 200kb, that means a saving of 90 % |
In the configuration dialog, the "Push Requests", allow infinite number of "Attempts to make to try contact unreachable peers" instead of just 10. This way if the person from a user is downloading goes offline, gnotella will try to resume the file from the same user until he goes online again, this would be great! |
- ability to download/resume the SAME file from multiple other users - chat function - less overhead in server administration - faster and more reliable downloads I also support the freeloaders option !!!! |
My votes 1) less CPU overhead (I think this is being worked on) 2) Resume from alternate servers 3) Overall cap on upload bandwith (instead of on each connection) 4) A bit more "pie in the sky", but related file grouping ala LimeWire, Phex, and Gnucleus. 5) Really "pie in the sky", but downloading a file from multiple servers simultaneously. Nothing does this yet, but the first to do it will really outpace the others. Possible hint: To make it work better use this strategy. * First connection requests entire file * Second connection requests from 50% to end of file. * Third requests from 25% to end of file * Fourth requests from 75% to end of file. * All requests are made from some starting point to the end of the file (rather than up to the next starting point) so they may continue on if the other connection drops. This works nicely since the thread can abort sooner if necessary. * If a download thread hits the point where another one starts it can a) just stop there or b) continue on if it's much faster than the other thread and would probably beat it to the end (the overtaken connection would be dropped). |
Gnotella Upgrade Wishlist First, there's so much I LOVE about Gnotella. The D/L recovery system actually works and the program is MUCH more stable on the WIN9x platform than my previous Servent (LimeWire). Here are my ideas (in order of priority) on how to make a good thing better: 1. Add a user adjustable TTL (Time To Live) to search inquiries. 2. Change the "Maximium Upload Speed" to reflect the total allocated and not individual user bandwidth. 3. Key upload bandwidth allocation to realtime usage and not averages. Currently, downloads will stall and sometimes die while waiting for averages to fall if the "Maximium Upload Speed" is reduced during their progress. 4. Upgrade the search AI to respond better to complex inquiries (ie: more than 2 key words). 5. Add more search slots (currently limited to 3). 6. Allow server-specific directory search requests by clicking or entering the user's IP address. (Something like Napster's "Hotlist" feature). 7. Freeloader filters. (Yes, I know everyone is asking for this!). |
Main Wishes: 1) Never give Freeloaders a chance !! 2) Timeout function for searches is really a great suggestion. 3) File Download from multiple servers (segmented downloading) 4) option to give a minimum file size when searching 5) remove the afildb.exe (just use too much CPU time) Cosmetic Changes: 1) remove the checkbox for removing Mandragore virus in the Gnotella options. Gnotella should remove ALL viruses by default, without that the user set an option 2) Apply button in the preferences should be invisible until changes are made 3) ability to configure the search filter types |
we need a better search algorithm (have a look at Napster, before they run the filtersystem ;-)). e.g. excluding/including some special names. Also support for wildcards wouldn't be bad. |
An option to limit the size of the logfile ,,uploads.txt" in the ,,log" directory is very necessary. Otherwise this file grow and grow and grow. Maybe also option to DISABLE this logfile for security reasons !!!!! |
1) Resizable windows which remember last known windows position. 2) Search by exact phrase. 3) Search with filters (ie. only show those +Available) 4) Selected unsuccessful partial files to be stored in designated temporary holding area, and client alert users when the users is online and available to continue resumed download/upload. |
a modest proposal... ? Quote:

1- chat would be nice... 2- file resumption from another server... altough I'm not sure that would be possible... and might invite more harm than good. 3- DO NOT add a freeloader filter. I don't like freeloaders either, but that also invites more freeloaders in a way... I could just as easily set my filter so high that noone could download from me as easily as I could share nothing. Maybe this would work... give a filter option to block ip's sharing 0 files instead of a set number... that way everyone has to at least share one file. |
maybe your are right about your thoughts about freeloaders. maybe we should forget this function. now i think this option could make the same damage like the new microsoft license model to the user so forget the freeloader option !! |
Guest book built-in. Many times I had downloaded 2-3 times from the same source just to discover that the faults lies with the files not the transfer. You need to inform the originator about the corrupted files. And many files are not properly titled, causing us downloading for something otherwise. |
how about a Newsletter Service for Gnotella? |
Instead of just ".zip" search have it include rar, ace, and other compressed files. |

if gnotella UPLOADS something to another user the Gnotella trayicon should show this with an extra colour !! |
wish It may sound like a novel idea but I think some help/faq/guide function would be helpful |
Downloading limits Very often when I download files I want several from one user. That leads to either many busy calls or all download slots occupied by files from that user, the latter resulting in worse network performance for others. What I would like to see is download limits on a per user basis similar to the one that already exists for uploads. |
- sorting by all heading on all pages - max upload & download caps (not per user) - favorite server lists (ie - napster hotlist) - on/offline status for servers on download page (would keep me from sending push requests to servers that are offline) - some method to continue downloads from another server (although i don't like the grouping function like limewire) it would just allow you to match file sizes to determine if a server has a copy of the file you were originally downloading. Gnotella is the best, even as it is (except for the upgrade notification :P) |
Custom web page would be nice, like being able to write templates with tags in them |
I am against the freeloader filter. There are people (like me) who can't always share files due to network configurations. Any protocol which relys on IP adresses will fail outgoing, but work ok incomming (I think, maybe I got that backwards) This is because I am on a LAN with 26 computers using the same external IP. Using the (56k) dial up, I always share, but that is only availabe half the day. |
