TROJAN's on Gnutella network: My experience READ THIS There must be hundreds and thousands of you who are unaware that your being spyed upon by nasty TROJAN programs placed upon your systems without your knowledge by hackers. They could be on your systems right now and you wouldn’t even know it. They could be looking thru your directories and files, reading your financial information, getting your credit card info, reading your emails and your documents or setting your system up to be a host for a major attack against a big corporation or worst. Did you know they could even be watching you while you are at your computer? Do you have a web cam? Just image this for a second. A hacker is in your system and your just casually going about your business and he turns on your web. Who do you think he will see? YOU! Why am I writing this note? Well I just spent 3 days removing the SUBSEVEN Trojan otherwise known as BACKDOOR-g22 and my system is also infected with the PORNDIAL5 Trojan. I got my infected .ZIP file from the Gnutella network in just under a week of trying the service. I was stupid. I neglected to install a good Trojan scanner on my win2k machine and by opening this .zip file infected my entire system. I was lucky, I caught the infection before anyone could hack my system but some of you out there may not be so luck .You need to get yourselves a good Trojan scanner capable of detecting Trojans before some hacker gets you. While Mcafee is a virus scanner IT IS NOT a Trojan scanner and may or may not detect the presence of a Trojan on you computer. So don’t think your safe by using a Norton or Mcafee. PORNDIAL5 -: This Trojan is a scary one in that if your using a modem to dial into the Gnutella network and you have this Trojan on you computer your in for a huge telephone bill and I mean huge. Mcafee will detect this one but its relatively new and nobody knows much about it. All they know is that it calls 900 numbers and racks up a huge phone bill. If you have a modem connection your in danger but if your using DSL/CABLE your relatively safe. I also have this one on my system and still have one instance of it to remove. I don’t download porn and I don’t visit porn sites and I have not found the zip file that this Trojan could have come from yet but I suspect I got it from somewhere on gnutella. With that said I am concerned with the infections on the Gnutella network and feel that if all of us just take A few precautions we can stop the spread of Trojans and hackers from getting into our systems. If you find an infected file KILL IT! Don’t offer if for download! I have included a few links below to few really good Trojan scanners. One is by an Australian company. Its call TDS-3 Diamond. Tauscan: »www.agnitum.com/products/tauscan/ Anti-Trojan: »www.anti-trojan.net/at.asp?l=en Diamond TDS: »tds.diamondcs.com.au/ The Cleaner: »www.moosoft.com WANT TO READ SOMETHING REALLY SCARY, VISIT THIS LINK http://www.commodon.com/threat/threat-sub7.htm Let me know if this information has helped you eradicate something you didn’t know existed on your system. I would sure like to hear from you. -AuSSie |
Unfortunately some people just have to learn the hard way, Mwuhahahaha ------------------ That's all I have to say about that! |
aussie, thanks for the information i also recommend that people get themselves a good firewall.. ZoneAlarm has been rated as the best, free, personal firewall known of by the author of this site: www.grc.com (a software developer, and researcher of internet security) |
JUST DON'T RUN A EXE FILE!!! And get Linux, it's free and just like Windows, click point, run mpgs edit, full office suite for FREE! try it and you won't go back! www.mandrake.com its easy! |
and you think that everybody gonna belive you???? |
Ive used zonealarm and the best firewall ive found is ConSeal. It doesnt have all the cool lookin lights n all that and costs a few bucks but its the absolute best. One could find a crack for it if one were to look in the right places (for all you cheapskates out there) www.signal9.com |

To: that is funny, you got too much time on your hands, to take that much time to be a jerk blows me away. The guy was just trying to help peole who don't know. |
Well... If we had to learn everything in life the same way we learn about computers, we'd be pretty ignorant. And a lot of us using progs like Gnotella are probably blessed with a lot of spare time ;) I use the mentioned, free (software), firewall ZoneAlarm. It goes of ones every hour or so. I'm just assuming that it's something bad waiting to happen when it does, but maybe it's just flashing a false warning so that I'll get impressed with how ZoneAlarm saves my PC...:) One way to stay away from trojans is to get out of cyberspace and into reality...hippie crap:D I just like using the smily faces, got nothing to say. You all can give me a written spanking instead of sharing knollage (is that how it's spelled?) and files if you want, but what's the point:confused: pax |
Don't panic Now come off it! First of all, nothing happened to your beloved PC, didn't it! 2nd, if you scream that there are people sniffing in your PC, DON'T GO ONTO THE INTERNET! You must be doing the same, otherwise you wouldn't read and post on GNUTELLA forums, or? Trojans do NO harm, most of the time. Only IDIOTS would use a trojan to harm you or your PC. And then ONLY, if you are a *******, or collecting a lot of kiddy sex porn! And then your PC should be killed of indeed. Lots of people use trojans for remote connections to their own and other computers. It is an amazing tool, and helps to communicate with each other. The internet is what it initially was said to be: The information super highway. Don't try to become a cop, directing the traffic! You will only invite people to get you really off the net! A trojan is NOT a virus. A virus spreads itself, is either totally useless, nasty or destructiv and spreads itself automatically to most, if not all programs on your PC, plus can mail itself to your friends automatically. They are nasty bits and are smaller and harder to detect than a trojan. Let the kids play, and have fun and let them learn. And learn yourself! Happy surfing J |
Geez... It's really a big deal this trojan stuff! I'd rather use the other kind (rubber...duh). But then again, I personally have no use for the Trojan-type programs. They're probably really nice if you get to know them... I just think it's a tad bit silly to keep this topic alive (yeah, I see the irony that I'm keeping it alive, but I just can't stop myself). I just psted my previous reply to get a little twist to it. To make people see that it's not that big a deal. But OK: This is soooo important. I really don't have a problem with you kids playing around on the internet...God knows I am... not a kid, but I'm definetly playing around. But just because some of us don't want too many probles while surfin' around doesn't make us morans. The internet is all it can be, and more. People just seem to take it to serious. Chill |

alright, let's clear up a few misconceptions here... First off, no trojan can insert itself into your system by you simply opening a zip file. You have to execute the contents of that zip file (this means you have to run an .exe file, a .com file or a .bat file). The porndial trojan is very easy to pick up, a number of warez sites have it set to auto-download on your system. It's annoying more than harmful, but it's ridiculously easy to get rid of - usually it just puts itself on your desktop or somewhere easy to find on your hard drive. Also, trojans aren't just 'back door access' programs like netbus - a trojan is, by definition, a program that stays hidden. Beyond that, a trojan can have just about any purpose (usually malign) whatsoever. If you DO have a trojan backdoor on your computer, don't panic. It doesn't do anything bad by itself, so there's a big possibility that your system is ok. All it does is leave your computer's ports open for scanning and access by people who have the correct client program. All I can say is GET YOURSELF A GOOD FIREWALL. I have no experience with ConSeal so can't say anything for or against it, but ZoneAlarm is good in that it allows YOU to control what programs can and can't access the internet from your computer. THIS IS A GOOD THING. Especially where backdoor access programs are concerned - if they can't get at your tcp/ip ports, then the threat they pose is nullified. You still need to get rid of them, tho (obviously :-) ) If you're comfortable with netbus et al and have a use for them e.g. remote access to your home system from work, good for you. Just make sure that you're the ONLY person who can log in that way! As far as getting these files through gnutella goes, if all you do is use gnutella as a 'napster-a-like' system i.e. to search purely for .mp3 files, then you're safe. An mp3 file is basically a highly compressed .wav file - it's purely audio/video data, there are no executable components to it. It is NOT simply another kind of .zip file, the only thing you can put into .mp3s are audio and video. So, in summary - 1. if you have a trojan, it's nothing to start getting all paranoid about. There's so many computers out there the chances are minimal that you'll be hit.... 2. GET A GOOD FIREWALL!!! www.zonealarm.com (it's free...if you want to pay some cash, try that ConSeal program). 3. Just because you use Gnutella, it doesn't mean that yoou're automatically going to be getting trojans. Nevertheless, be careful. 4. Above all, USE YOUR NOGGIN (aka head). Don't do stupid things like downloading random programs without virus protection. 5. All of the above, reiterated twice for effect, impact and retention on your part. |
Clap clap clap... Very well said J |
I think the way "that is funny" put his words was hilarious. Having found such a hilarious post after just 10 minutes of browsing this forum increases my faith in this client. I'd have to say that the stupidest thing (IMHO) any one computer owner could do is to have a computer WIRED to the net (dsl, cable, whatever) and NOT protect it in any way. This goes for Linux and Windows boxes alike (and probably macs). Having an unprotected Linux with nothing done to hosts.allow, ipchains etc. is just gambling with your data, that's how simple it is. Fortunately not much harm can be done through a Windows -box, which should make it less susceptible to hacking attempts. (You can't get root access on a win9x, mostly you can't telnet to it, use it as a mail relay server or anything. Only the owner can be harmed and that is just and fair, because it's ok to be punished for one's stupidity. Just a small example: I too was stupid once. I installed a Linux -box one evening by ftp directly from a mirror site. I was tired and left it unprotected when I went to bed and in the morning it was hacked. Another example: I found an exe-file on the net that was supposed to be able to crash IIS, Microsoft's webserver software. I downloaded the file, launched it (virus check enabled) and got a program with one input-field and one ok-button. I put the address of our IIS server into the field and ... it crashed. So saying it takes a 13-year-old to do it is wildly exaggerated. A five year old could do it. Hacking is often far from the equivalency of being a guru master mind of computer science. Bear that in mind! Finally, I fully concur with everything "that is funny" said about causing panic in other users by shouting out false information publicly. The person tried to help, credit belongs to him for that, but getting your facts straight before trying to help is always a good idea. Just my thoughts... -JJ |
