Gnotella connects - but still locks up after each mouse click

Using Gnotella 1.0.5 for some time now and it worked fine but seeing problems now.

Gnotella connects fine and is uploading and downloading just fine. Clicking on any button such as "Hosts", "Out", "In", "Find", etc works to bring up that window but then Gnotella is frozen and ignores mouse clicks for about 30 seconds to a minute. After freezing stops, I get to work on that window and can enter values for various inputs. If I Choose a button ("Hosts", "Out", ...) then the freezing cycle repeats.
Also, when I choose the "Setup" I get the popup window but mouse clicks are dead of course but I can use CTRL-TAB to change the tabs and then use TAB to cycle around and change inputs.

Ok, I now have done these things that I read in earlier posts:
1. I removed the limeware connection
2. I added the bearshare connection
3. Reduced HostCacheSize from 5000 to 500
4. Down sized amount of files to less than 100 or so
5. Unchecked "Look up Hostnames" in Appearance tab.

But still I have the freezing problem. Can someone suggest anything else to try.

FWIW, I installed Morpheus and Gnutella but honestly neither are even close to the features and ease of use as Gnotella. I'm sticking with Gnotella as long as possible.

There is supposed to be a new hosts.txt and a Gnotella beta that was at one time available on the Gnotella.com site. Has anyone got one or both of these as I would like to get both. Aren't these available for download anywhere?

To prevent Gnotella from freezing simply connect to less hosts and/or refresh your hosts list every time you notice it is slowing down.

I have it set to connect to only 4 hosts. How do I refresh the host list?

Thanks in advance.

I emptied the hosts.txt file to see if it makes any difference but it doesn't.

In further testing I have discovered something about the freezing.
If I change context by clicking on a different window (File Explorer for example) and then change back to Gnotella then it will accept another mouse click. Then it freezes again. So, to test this really well I sized both the Gnotella and Explorer windows so they don't overlap. Then I alternated back and forth. Each time the focus is set to the Gnotella window it is good for one mouse click without waiting - then freeze up.

I'm using W2k and no other application behaves this way.

Any ideas what this points to as the real problem?

Re:

I've been using Gnotella for months, and the refresh hosts list thing has always helped me. It does make a difference but only when it starts freezing.

In even further testing I have found that the freezing seems to be happening because the mouse event messages are being captured by the first button clicked. That makes it look like its frozen but in reality the clicks just get captured by the same button and so don't activate anything else. When I click on a different application the event capture is released.

This must be happening in the Gnotella application for some reason and I'm guessing on some systems the magic mismatch of underlying drivers or whatever cause this behaviour to act buggy. I'll keep trying to figure out what it is but in the meantime just clicking on a different application at least un-freezes it for one more click. The Setup tab window has to be first brought up, click on different app and then back to the Setup window and then it is active on all tabs and it doesn't freeze up after that. The rest of the main app. still freezes up as described before until clicking on a different application.

This type of freezing is not related to having to many hosts or some of the other ways that people seem to be posting about.
It isn't solved by the other methods either.

I tried a variety of things to get this fixed and finally after installing (or reinstalling) DirectX 8.1 the freezing has stopped.

I am happily back to using the best Gnutella client available.
