Why do you need this 'but'? I'm sure you could learn in less than a month the most important things --> reading code ... and let's say after a year with some praktise every week, you should be far enough to do most of the things you would like to have changed yourself... if you would really like to. Coding is not that difficult as people tend to see it...
(But it is certainly a little effort, because you can only learn it by practising it...)
