gtk-gnutella 0.91.1 slow on Red Hat 8.0

I am running gtk-gnutella 0.91.1 on Red Hat 8.0 and it is slower than slow. When I click button I might get a reaction thirty-seconds later. There are intermittent moments when it is responsive this is not the case.
Someone metioned an initial hashing function of shared files, but ten minutes after starting the program doesn't change anything.

RPM or from sources?
If from sources: GTK1 or GTK2 ?
How many gnet connections do you have?
What kind of machine (processor, RAM) do you run it on?

GTK2 is slow, and having more than 6 gnet connections probably could make it slow.
The hashing should only consume a small amout of CPU.

Gets faster

If you re-jig the configure script to
use -O3 instead of -O2 and also add your
cpu type, for me that is.....
CFLAGS="-O3 -mcpu=athlon-mp"
there are about 3/4 of these.
I still get 'spikes' of CPU activity but these are
usually only 1-2 secs

Use the cvs version and use ./configure --enable-gtk2
It looks miles better for RH8.0.
I had trouble with the non cvs with RH8.0 too
don't know whether the cvs version is better or
custom compiling it makes it loads faster.
Either way its worth it

from source tar.gz file,
I have gtk 2 and 1.2, I am not sure how to determine which one is utilized.
this particular box is an athlon 1600xp with 750MB Ram. It's on an old KT7 mobo, so it isn't the latest and greatest.
Connection is RoadRunner (cable modem).
Other applications, evolution, mozilla run fine. Nothing else on this machine hangs like this.
I have lessened the number of clients, It doesn't seem to like more than six or seven.

Defaults to 1, type ./configure --help for more info

gtk-gnutella fails to resolve localhost

gtk-gnutella is very slow on my linux machine. It tries and fails to resolve the local machine: on startup I get error messages saying:

03/07/17 20:43:52 (WARNING): cannot resolve "phrenia": Unknown host

I know I could add "127.0.0.0 phrenia" to
/etc/hosts, and this helps. However, this confuses sendmail, so that sending a mail takes 3 minutes.

Is there a solution to this dilemma?
