Shared directory security
 

Hi,

This probably sounds really dumb but I'm evaluating gtk-gnutella for p2p sharing...

Question is - are there any security issues relating to sharing directories, etc, or to put it another way - how much access do others have to my filesystem?

At the beginning let me say this: gtk-gnutella is not meant to be super-secure. If you run it, you do at your own risk.

... of course if we find a bug, we try to fix it.

Having said that... well... people should not have access to your filesystem at all. All that should have access to are the files that gtk-gnutella has index from the directories you told it to look in. Gtk-gnutella does not support a host-browsing, meaning that other people shouldn't be able to get a complete list of the files you are sharing.

Currently there is no way to actually see in the gui which files are indexed... but you can see the total size and number of files in your shared files library.

If you feel up to it, feel free to contribute a patch to browse the shared files library in the gui.

i had the same question as i have a network and some of my files have to be shared on my network.
using windows 98 is rubbish for protection files and folders.
i didnt want the outside world knowing what was in this folder.
im sure there is some hackers about that could tell us if they can get into our private folders using lime wire or not.
or if someone has any ideas how to password protect our shared folders that is easy access for us.
im sure everybody would appreciate it.

There is no way of password-protecting your shared folders. If you share them, then people can download the files in those folders from you.

If you want to set up a "closed network" with access restrictions, then use a VPN or set up an FTP server.
