what do these mean?
 
mpg
mpeg
mov
avi
mp4
and why am I only able to view the ones marked avi? Someone please help me.

Those are file extensions. You can look them up with google.

MPG, MPEG, a standard internet movie platform.

MOV, QuickTime Movie, Apple Macintosh native movie platform

AVI, Audio Video Interleaved - Windows movie file

MP4, MPEG-4 Video File

Probably a codec problem. See this thread: CODECs list for Movies/Alternate players / Video help forums/ video-mp3 fixers. Consider trying VLC media player It has the codecs built in and can play most file types.
