I also can't connect...

I had to restore my computer and now Bearshare version 5.2.5.1 will not connect.
It would always connect up until a few days ago.
I still have it in my laptop and it works fine from there.
I'm afraid to do a system restore on that one because I'm sure that I will get the same problem. I may have to do a system recovery on that one because unfortunatly my laptop got a virus...
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Angie

nothings wrong with your computer bearshare sold out

the reason you can no longer get your bearshare to connect after downloading it..is all the old bear share versions are now dead they no longer work. a few links for old bearshares will let u up grade to the new bearshare ..that is owned by Recording Industry Association of America..thats right the makers of bearshare sold out to the man !

you can of course use the new bearshare if you like and pay 1 dollar a song you download.
im afraid pretty soon there will be no more free file shariing..ive heard the governement is planning to go after limewire now and the other file share networks. and do to them what they done to bearshare. make you pay ofr every song u download. load of crap aint it ... if you think im lieing ask around and everyone will tell you what i just told you...

My old betas of 5.1 are still working. Perhaps the 5.2 versions have been shut down but the 5.1s are still running normally.

The Problem is...

that it does connect in my laptop.
Because I did a system restore on the desktop and downloaded it again, this one is the one that doesn't work.
It only connects to Bearshare 6.

i am having a similar problem with 5.1.0b25. after looking around for a replacement for the tortoise known as emule, i found Shareaza, it's notably slower than emule. i then tried Shareazaplus, which is much faster, but i get a nag screen indicating it's a Alpha and not suitable for general use. and i also read a post somewhere that at some point in the past one of the developers had added some 'stuff' to it, and was removed from the development team. i now have bearshare 5.1 beta. i first ran it on a frozen snapshot, which i test all new (to me) software on first, and was pretty impressed with the speeds. i like the feature set of Shareaza better, but the mission was to increase dn/up speeds and Bearshare was certainly much faster. but it has not connected.

well it seem as i was typing this Bearshare is connected, but UDP is firewalled while TCP is not. i checked the rules in the firewall i use Online Armor, and UDP is granted the same autonomy as TCP. perhaps a restart of Bearshare will clear that up.

the only reservations i have so far with Bearshare is or was webstats.dat which Prevex2 nailed as malware. it also was nailed in my frozen snapshot by Prevx2, but i allowed it to run under 'Probation' instead of 'Jailing' and eventually cleaning it up. i googled webstats.dat and there seemed to be a general agreement that it is malware. so when i decided to run Bearshare on my system snapshot, i did all ow Prevx2 to 'Jail' it and then clean it from my system. Bearshare seems to be running fine without it, which is good because i trust Prevx and if it says Bearshare contains malware, then the bear would have to go if it could not function without that file. and lastly i would like to ask is there a user guide for the 5.1 beta as the newer guide seems not to relate at all to the older builds.

For now, I am using Ares and it gives me as many results as Bearshare. I usually look for remixes. As you say, others run slower than Bearshare.
I hope that it gets resolved soon. :(

Concerning the issue of 'replacements' then the eDonkey and Overnet networks are about rarity and not speed however if you obtain the clean version of eDonkey2000 then you'll find its actually 'faster' than using eMule and indeed 'better' than.

At the moment the most populated eDonkey server is quite low so results aren't as good as normal but peer exchange will do its bit.
