Skins!

You guys should think about designing a program to make your own skins so it's easier to do. I tried and I got lost. Or you could just make a black and red one for me...lol

swimkid July 21st, 2004 09:43 AM

i'd like an xp style skin.

sberlin July 21st, 2004 11:22 AM

Use Windows XP, download Java 1.4.2 (or the 1.50 beta), download LimeWire 4.1.2, and choose the 'Windows Skin'. It'll be XP. I use it daily. :)

CashGuy_7 July 21st, 2004 08:04 PM

What about my red and black one.... By the way, the Windows Xp theme is really kewl.

sberlin July 21st, 2004 08:35 PM

There's no red and black skin right now, I don't think. We do have plans to add a feature which lets people easily make their own skins, but it's not too high on the list of things to do. It'll get done at some point, but there's no guarantee of when.

CashGuy_7 July 21st, 2004 08:41 PM

It's all good. At least someone is thinking about making one. That would be really kewl. Please take ya time.

somebody509 January 31st, 2005 12:15 PM

any estimate of when this will be done?

sberlin January 31st, 2005 12:42 PM

No real date on it. If someone gets inspired, it could be tomorrow. Otherwise, it could be next year. LimeWire's all open-source, so if you or any of your friends are particularly nifty coders, we'll gladly accept a patch that makes the skins.

doesn't sound too difficult to do...
but then again... i'm still just starting on Visual Basic... the stuff I'm doing right now isn't exactly... cool...or fun... or useful
but ey... i'm getting there:P

Skin Program.

Actually making a program to make skins woudltn be that dificult. I could make one in visual basic where you woudl type in each color and it would show you what is changing while you type in the color. As far as zipping it all and making it a lwtp youd have to do that solo I have no idea how to do that kinda stuff same with the images youd have to edit and stuff outside of it. Umm If i figure out the skin code enough and have some extra time I may make it.

Skin Program Completed.

Okay I finished virsion 1.0.
Its not as easy as going and picking the colors but it comes with a hex color finder. It will go and compile it and save it for you. As far as the images you have to edit on your own. Hope you enjoy it :)

Its pretty small and requires no installation :)

PDG1 April 18th, 2005 04:12 PM

holy crap zimdale
that didn't take you long:P
nice work:D

Zimdale April 18th, 2005 04:20 PM

Well it was a pretty simple program. May upgrade it a bit later if I feel like it. Thanks for the compliment though :)

Umm one thing ide like to know by a programmer or someone that just knows it. Will the limewire font support any font on your computer or is there only cirtan ones that work? If theres only cirtan ones which ones work?

et voilà April 18th, 2005 05:37 PM

Félicitations Zimdale! I think you should put an interrogation mark next to the "primary color, secondary color, window color lines" when clicked the interrogation mark either show you the part of the GUI affected or simply a text descritpion in a tooltip.

Good work!

Zimdale April 18th, 2005 05:41 PM

See erm here's the problem with that. Mabey in future virsion but I dont exactle "understand" all of what the skins do havnt had the time to experiment. I kinda wrote that entire program directly off of the General Theme. Also I will put some of your guyses skins in there if ya want as a demonstration if ya email them to me at Zimdale@gmail.com. Umm already planning to make it where you can make a whole theme like demo pictures just need to get a few friends to help with editing the picks for the presets. Doubt that I can zip it up and make it a tlwp thing though Cannot find out how to do that anywhere. :(

Umm if I do figure it out im pretty good with discriptions. Just released a huge tutorial program and people seemed to like it. I guess I could make a tutorial thing in there would jsut gotta learn it. Not hard just takes time :)

Umm just for some more background my original plan was to make it where it would have an option where you could bring a pic of limewire was and when you mouse over the textbox of the color it would show you what that is referring to would just take a lotta pics and would boost the file size up quite a bit. I may add that, its just that kinda stuff takes time :(

New Limewire Skin Creator

Okay releasing another one. Not much different but this time ya got a few startup screens ya can choose from.
http://host.burning-red.net/Mhosting/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=22

Sorry for not hostin it through limewire and stuff but its to big for this forum to host :(

PDG1 April 26th, 2005 07:33 PM

:( it sure don't work for me....

I tried checking out that burning-red.net thing... and i can't seem to get into that hosting forum... i think it might be because i need to be registered or something... but would that explain why I can't Download it straight from the link?
and if that were the case... why would it be dedicated to hosting crap on it to link to?

haha... N/m
just tried it again, she works:P not sure why it wasn't working before

Zimdale April 27th, 2005 01:34 PM

Umm it has all the other stuff because I hosted it on my hosting forum. Its a bit easyer then having to go and acutally upload it to the server. Umm a little update. I am currently working on a Mac virsion of this. Wont come out as fast is this did though. Im not very experienced in mac programming :(

Sidian April 28th, 2005 01:55 AM

Um.....yeah thats great and all but as of right now it takes me to cnet.com or better known as download.com and a letter from the ceo....anyhow

an idea!
first off if you are doing the code in java then you wont really have to boost the file size....lol just make it dynamic, either have a self updating image or maybe just have it render the image when it is completed, also to get the windows xp theme going with selectable colors you are going to have to define a transparency change or a blend option to put two colors in one bar either vertically or horizontally basically more or less try and crack the windows version and go off of that, you know right click, properties, appearance tab, if you can find a program that already has that setup and crack its code or find the microsoft version and crack that code then its more or less copy and past, redefine and repackage.

hope to see a "final" ver. soon, have a fun time with this project!

Zimdale April 28th, 2005 04:23 AM

Uhh yeah my main hosting is down I guess agian. Ill host it on my other hosting tonight and put the link up. No im not doin it in Java Im doin it in Visual Basic. For mac im doin it in RealBasic Which personally I dont think even compares to VB. Had to take out a lot of stuff because RB didnt support it. The theme and stuff for the mac follows the Mac OS X theme. Uhh not sure if I can get the Windows XP theme goin. Would have to do a lot of extra work in vb for it to work. Really should do it in Java but rite now im very unexperienced in Java so it wouldnt be anything compared to what it is now. Only way I can think of making it dynamic updating would be put a winsock client to a server to download it which automatically overwrites the original file. Will have another virsion out of it soon. That one was kinda a quicky that I did just to update it. Speaking of that if anyone knows RealBasic good if ya could email me at Zimdale@gmail.com because im really havin some troubles with creatin that hex table in it.

Umm one thing ide like to know by a programmer or someone that just knows it. Will the limewire font support any font on your computer or is there only cirtan ones that work? If theres only cirtan ones which ones work?

Limewire will use any font that your installation of Java accepts to load. Java by default is installed to use a default set of fonts according to the startup system locale. On Java 1.5, this changed because now the new font properties file is smarter and will be able to handle fonts for many more scripts at the same time, using a new format for the fonts properties file. There's still a default set of fonts preconfigured in Java, and this properties file assumes that your system already has those listed fonts preinstalled on your system.

So, for these reasons, the default fonts used in Java are only made of the core fonts that are available and installed by default on any OS installation (there's an exception for Thai, because the Sun JRE ships with an additional TrueType font which will be used by default in Thai environments, because not all Thai installations are installed with the same core font, but also because the core fonts for Thai shipped with Windows are very poor and too much narrow and tall, causing nightmares when adpating the display size of a GUI dialog).

Now Limewire used by default the OS-independant Metal look and feel, just tweaked with some settings to make Limewire themes. since some versions, Limewire now ships with native platform themes which are accessible only on the same OS type: there are some native themes for MacOSX, a Windows theme (that uses the native Windows theme settings from the Display control panel).

The Windows theme is however not implemented natively, for compatibility reasons as Limewire is based on Swing and AWT portable display components.

For now Limewire has no project to use SWT instead (that would enhance the performance and would also allow *using* rather then *emulating* the native OS look and feel). This would complicate the support for now, as SWT has still lots of integration problems on many host installations, notably when it is used on systems not made for developers. SWT is excellent for example within Eclipse (which is also a Java written application to develop Java applications).

Switching Limewire from AWT+Swing to SWT is a lot of development efforts and there's no guarantee that such rewritten GUI would work on older OSes used by Limewire users (so this would require maintaining two branches in parallel for the Limewire GUI, one using Swing+AWT and the other using SWT).

It's unfortunate because SWT is already ready to support antialiased text throughout the GUI, as set up by your operating system, including with support for ClearType on notebooks and LCD/TFT displays, and because SWT uses much less memory than Swing+AWT (but Sun has considerably enhanced this in Java 1.4.1 and 1.5, by rewriting AWT so that it will make use of the new Java2D API which now can profit of accelerated hardware, and DirectX or OpenGL display interfaces)

Zimdale April 29th, 2005 03:19 PM

Thanks for the info verd but think I could get a list of them or do ya know any way or place I can look up the default fonts?

massillonmarine March 15th, 2006 06:30 PM

Could you choose a skin, let's say you choose "green" theme, and put all the info on the LW Skin Creator below it. Basically a completed page on how to make your own skin. Break it down for us "Barney" style, please. Thanks.
