LimeWire 3.2.0

We found two serious bugs in LimeWire 3.1.0, prompting us to make another major release so that everyone upgrades.

The first bug was simply horrendous -- a line of code that completely broke the forwarding of queries from Ultrapeers to leaves that has been in the code since LW 2.9.9. This slipped through our automated tests because our tests tend to only attach one leaf to an Ultrapeer, and this particular problem would not show up in that case. You would have seen this bug if you saw many searches passing through your computer for content you did not have while running as a leaf.

The second bug was with push proxies in 3.1.0. Push proxies had a serious, essentially client-side bug that would cause them to break. This was also a change to one line of code that is fixed in 3.2.0.

So, this all means that 3.2.0 will do what we thought LW had been doing since 2.9.9 in the case of the first bug, and what we thought it was doing since 3.1.0 in the case of the second bug. We'll tighten up our automated tests to catch these cases in the future. We already have about 600 tests that run every night and typically pass 100%, but these particular cases slipped through.

So, give 3.2.0 a shot and scrap those older versions!

Thanks.

Thanks for letting us know. It's very reassuring to hear that we don't have to find this out the hard way!
Cheers

et voilà June 30th, 2003 05:26 PM

That explains why I saw lots of porn searches through the monitor window...even if I don't share/upload any!

Bien, très bien.

stief June 30th, 2003 07:49 PM

ça va et voilà?

Anyone care to help with the following?
I noticed I'm connected to myself in the connections list (my gatewa IP and external IP show as two entires). Normal?

What kind of vendor is @version@ ?

noticed a remark in cvs core.limewire.org about naming "Thread-3". Most of the crashes I see show Thread 3 crashed. Might naming threads cut down on these crashes?

And--who gets the primary credit for the above two bug fixes? Looks like it's Adam to me!

I've been running as an UP for almost 1.5 hrs w/o a crash. Ça va bien!
Cheers

et voilà June 30th, 2003 07:56 PM

Salut Stief, oui ça va bien.... @version@ is a version compiled directly from the source of limewire.org. The connection problem seems as a bug to me.... it occurred in the Lw 1.x series when you couldn't find an host to connect to, it's weird it happens anymore, I thought that you can't get a plain 0.6 peer connection anymore?

stief June 30th, 2003 08:15 PM

The protocol shows as Ultrapeer . . .they're both compressing 25%/25%, QRP 13.409% for both, the 192.168.59.1 gateway is incoming, handling 9 less I/O messages than the external IP which is outgoing.

Aussi, I've about 68 entires in the connections list (a goodly mix of UP/leaf; incoming/outgoing), but the stats show connected hosts as 32.

Blackbird June 30th, 2003 09:18 PM

Stief:

Weird about the connected to yourself. I noticed that couple versions ago (although I didn't note any adverse problems from it) but I noted that it was gone in the current version.

I won't be dlin just yet, I'll wait for Jum's version!

[Edit]

Couldn't help but noticing on the website that it makes no mention, anywhere, ever, of the changes made from one version to another. I think people would be more motivated to download a new version if they saw what changes were made between versions. Ya know the deal. Joe User has a problem, goes to limewire, sees a new version, and lo and behold, on the download page, his bug or problem is fixed/resolved in the new version. Joe User dls. As now, Joe User might be discouraged by dlin because he sees more work for him and no hope of a resolution to his problem/bug.

I've noticed this when the magnet enabled version came out, but never thought much of it until I read something that made me think it was unusual. (encore merci à et voilà).

aside--I like to run both--helps me get a sense of the differences between java 1.3.1 and 1.4.1DP102. I used to do this with Acquisition, but I'm fascinated by the stats.

I'm impressed that 3.2.0 hasn't crashed as an UP after 3 hrs. So much has been fixed. Now I just have to sort out the upload problems with the ISP.

Adam,

I hope this is an easy fix. When I opened LimeWire v3.2 I got this:

Java version 1.1.8 from Apple Computer, Inc.
Mac OS v. 9.2.2 on PowerPC

Hi LimeDude,

The bug you received is related to the JIT (Just In Time) compiler on OS9. JIT compiling is something that Java does to convert its code into native code in order to speed up the running. Unfortunately, it mutates the code in ways that can lead to unexpected problems.

Short of disabling JIT (which is far from ideal), solving this issue is rather difficult. Upgrading to OSX should definitely solve this particular problem, but I realize that's not always possible.

Does the problem occur on every startup, or just occasionally?

Thanks.
