LimeWire 1.6 beta available A beta version of LimeWire 1.6 is now available for testers at www.limewire.com/beta/ Adventurous users are encouraged to try it out and report any problems they may have. If everything checks out ok, we will make this available on our website for the general public. Version 1.6 fixes some of the problems with 1.5: <ul> <li>The 'missing javaw.exe' bug should be solved on Windows 95/98/ME. <li>LimeWire should connect to router.limewire.com properly, provided the server isn't overloaded. <li>Wi***/98/ME users running new.net are warned at install time. (LimeWire won't actually take the program off for you.) <li>The system tray is disabled on all systems but Win2k and WinNT. (To Wi***/98/ME users: you'll have to wait for this feature.) <li>Better Java 1.1.8 support for some weird configurations. </ul> As with version 1.5, LimeWire 1.6 has the following improvements over 1.4b: <ul> <li>Improved resumed downloads. <li>Measures speeds of remote hosts more accurately, displaying them in green if of high confidence. <li>Can launch files while they download. <li>New virtual machine should be much faster and more reliable. <li>Can minimize LimeWire into the system tray on WinNT/2k. <li>Improved push uploads and downloads. <li>Improved BearShare QHD compatibility. <li>Fixed bug downloading files with strange extensions. <li>Restores window size on startup. </ul> We hope you enjoy LimeWire! Sincerely, Christopher Rohrs Sr. Software Engineer LimeWire |
Keep up the work LimeWire Development Team! You guys kick ***! |
Re: LimeWire 1.6 beta available -- I tried to download it, but when I did anything the download box disappeared and left an Incomplete in my save folder. Anybody know what happened? Kirby |
Hey you guys do know you have to make the LimeWire available for people to download in order for people to try it out. This has happened with LimeWire 1.5 and now 1.6? C'mon whats going on over there? Kirby: the same thing happens with me. |
Beta Feedback This is a great update! I like the native look & feel (MacOSX). I appreciate all the work you guys do to make Limewire better. I had a little problem...well...not so little, I guess. The GUI went wacko. The montitor tab had been showing, uploading 4 files. I disconnected because I wanted to do some serious web surfing and left the files to finish uploading. When I was finish surfing, I planned to reconnect to the gnutella network. Anyway, when I went to check on the upload status, the window was frozen. It couldn't be moved, and the red, yellow, & green gumdrops wouldn't do anything. The window contained a line of text for each file being uploaded. The text was mostly unreadable, overlapping, and appeared to be made of large pixels. The rest of the window was mostly empty and sort of an orange color. Clicking on the LimeWire icon in the Dock causes the Dock to freeze for about 15 seconds, although I can still switch to other apps by clicking their windows. There is still network activity, so it appears that the files are continuing to upload, while the GUI went bye bye. Let me know if there is a better place to provide beta feedback and I will do it there. |
Thanks Cyclocide. I'll post any bugs I may encounter. |
Screen shot 1 Attachment(s) I have a screen shot referring to my previous post. It is 32K jpeg. Terry |
Is anyone else trying out the betas? Any problems so far? It looks like we have had a couple hundred people trying them out. Thanks -greg |
Feedback -- I downloaded 1.6 (Windows 98) this morning and found no major bugs, and I downloaded a few things fine. There was one glitch I found. On the scroll bars, when you scroll using the middle thing (Not the up and down things) the list blurs and it takes a second or two to restore it. That brings me to a suggestion... Are you going to put scroll wheel compatibilaty in LimeWire anytime soon? I have a mouse with one (Who doesn't?) and I would really like it. Kirby |
ScrollWheel I don't think Java can handle the scroll wheel input. If I am wrong, I would love to see a source of information on that. Personally, I would like that feature myself. So, you are saying that the scroll wheel just blurs things. Thanks -greg |
1 Attachment(s) -- Actually the scroll wheel doesn't blur things. I can very easily see how you would be confused. I mean the middle thing with the arrow pointing at it in the gif I attached. KIrby |
Thank you Thank you LimeWire 1.6 works fine now (in Windows 98) - it doesn't crash any more. Keep up the good work! Only one thing: why isn't it possible to download an identical file from a different location at the same time?? When I'm downloading a file I'm not allowed to click on other files with the same name and/or size... |
why you can't download two copies at once It's a by-product of the way resumes are implemented. If you download a file named X of size N, it's stored in the Incomplete folder as "T-N-X". If you later try to resume a file of the same size and name, LimeWire will be able to resume and append to that file by just checking that it exists on disk. If you were to download two copies of file X at the same time, they would be interleaved on disk in T-N-X! In fact this used to happen in an ancient version of LimeWire. That's why LimeWire enforces that only one downloader has a copy of T-N-X at a time. Now, it would be possible to allow you to resume a la LW1.5 while still downloading in parallel a la LW1.4. But that's a fair amount of work to implement, and it's not really clear that it's a needed feature. Besides, if we were to implement swarmed downloads in the future--no promises here, but it's certainly possible--that would render that code obsolete. OS/X notes We just posted a slightly modified version of the OS/X installer in www.limewire.com/beta/ The only difference is that the background on the spinning lime image is transparent. Here are the bugs people have reported on OS/X, and our diagnosis: <ul> <li>Configuration windows appears after every startup. We can't reproduce this. Is LW in a directory without write permissions? It needs to write limewire.props to record configuration settings. (Ideally we'd write this to the resource bundle, but we haven't firgured out how.) <li>Crashes on first startup. We occasionally get this but don't know why. A problem with the JDK on OS/X perhaps? <li>Graphics become scrambled. We can't repeat this. <li>Couldn't uncompress .sit file when downloading. We can't repeat this. Try dragging the .sit file directly to stuffit. </ul> Thanks for the feedback, and please let us know of any more problems. Christopher Rohrs Sr. Software Engineer LimeWire |
LimeWire 1.6 beta more reliable Limewire 1.6 beta is much more reliable than 1.4. While running 1.4 it used to quit unexpectedly (with code 139), after several hours. Limewire 1.6 has not crashed once. You have really made some improvements. Thanks for MacOSX install. It is great! I just dragged it into my old Limewire 1.4 folder and double-clicked it. The setup found the Shared folder. I did experience the errors you mentioned though not since yesterday. It is really cool to have a single file that is both the 'installer' and the application. |
1.6 beta suggestion For the resizable columns, in some of the tabs, the cursor does not change to the resizing cursor but remains as an arrow. Resizing still works with the arror, but it would be nice to see the little <-|-> cursor, just to confirm that resizing is possible. |

Other than that, keep up the great work. It's fun to see so much cool technology in one place. I'll send you bug reports, and maybe if I find some time, see what I can do to contribute. Alec Munro |
Well I don't know if this is of any help, I had no problems running 1.5 in winME, maybe becouse I keep my system clean with adaware, and i am a Phex fan, so I had a java runtime enviroment installed. ( ? ) But I recently installed win2K as a 2nd os and I decided to install limewire1.6 in it but it appears to be more buggy than 1.5 . The screen is flickering when a search is performed and the programme seems to respond more slow when it runs for over 1hr. |
I have downloaded 1.6 and been "playing" for several hours.I experianced only 2 minor problems to this point.First I had to download from the alternate site provided by cycloCide(thanks).Second,it reset windows as my default media player over realplayer.I just had to reintroduce realplayer to the program.Everything else seems to be running great and I appreciate and love the added ability to launch files while downloading.Keep up the great work guys!!!! |
Great! Keep the 1.6 feedback coming. -greg |

Reply: I can reporduce this by exiting Limwire using Quit from within OSX itself (using the pull down menu next to the blue Apple and quitting there) vs using File->Exit that is within the Limwire menus. If I use File->Exit, I dont see the config window again. David |
help me I tryed to download the 1.6 beta and when i install it it takes to long to set up the java thing |
patience We unfortunately can't make that any faster; it's Sun's code. However, I bet you one beer that it will work if you give it a few minutes. :) Christopher Rohrs |
Ver1.6 LimeWireOther I noticed that there is no LimeWireOther.zip in the beta 1.6 location. Will there be a LimeWireOther.zip beta 1.6? Or perhaps there were no changes made to the portion of the code that makes up LimeWireOther? I presume that all of the OS specific packages contain whats in LimeWireOther along with an OS specific JVM? LimeWireOther 1.4b works pretty well on OS/2 Warp Server for e-business, but it has a few problems and I'd like to try 1.6 before passing any judgements. |
The LimeWireLinux.tgz should work for all platforms if you have java. The only change actually is that you have to convert the ";" in the limewire.props classpath to ":" for it to work properly. We should probably be able to fix that. -greg |
Actually, I think I mean that the other way around. Convert the ":" to ";" in limewire.props for the classpath. -greg |
Question -- I have a question. When will the "real" 1.6 come out, not the beta? Also, for Win 9x users, when will we get the systray feature? Mac Betas - Missing Two Option Tabs Congratulations on an excellent and very stable program. I thought you would find it useful to know that both Mac Beta versions 1.5 and 1.6 are missing the last 2 "Options" tabs (Filters, Advanced) on one of my machines (iMac 233), but present on my other machine (PowerBase with G3 accelerator). On the latter machine everything works perfectly and completely. In addition to the missing Options tabs, Limewire on the iMac does not preserve changes to any options involving typing in a value (that is, the cancel, apply, and OK buttons don't work; they just turn dark colored with a click and nothing else). Both machines run OS 8.6 with _all_ latest Apple software updates, and they are connected to a LinkSys Cable Router with latest firmware. I use the most minimal extension set (that is, to get online) for both machines, using latest version of Conflict Catcher. Limewire folders on each machine have an identical installation of files and file sizes. I have rebuilt desktop and ran latest Norton Utilities and DiskWarrior, with no effect. I have made many installation attempts, always with no extensions loaded (shift-key down). I always give application at least 20mb memory. With the exception of the Options problems, Limewire works fine on iMac. Thanks P.S. Increased application memory and minimal extension set has reduced freezes and other problems down to 1 error per 20 hours of usage. |
