Beta 1.6d available--please try

The beta version of LimeWire 1.6d is now available for download at http://www.limewire.com/index.jsp/download_beta. The new features in this release (over 1.6c) are:

-System tray support on all flavors of Windows
-Installer should be slightly more robust on Windows
-Some minor bug fixes

We'd appreciate your help in testing this version. Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,
LimeWire team

LAMEWIRE 1.6D

Downloaded. Installed. Run.

Same problem as with 1.6b and 1.6c:
Can't Connect Anywhere At All.

Deleted. Worthless. Don't download. Use 1.4b instead.

crohrs August 3rd, 2001 12:16 PM

kiriuja:

The connection logic in 1.6d is the same as in LimeWire 1.4b. None of that code changed. Can you send your limewire.props files for both 1.4b and 1.6d (if you've still got it) to crohrs at limewire dot com.

I'm guessing you're firewalled?

I've sent you the file.

> I'm guessing you're firewalled?

Yes, I am firewalled. However, if you look at the message "Can't connect with Version 1.6b" by gtford, the guy is having the exact same problem, and he is not firewalled.

If like you said it's the same connection logic, then it's just a silly bug somewhere, and the only problem is reproducing it. As a matter of fact, nothing at all is showing up in the grid window that's in the Connected Hosts portion of the Connections tab, no matter which Connect button I click.

My system is Wi***, and gtford is running WinME. Please let me know if you need any more information.

me too

I am connected to the net via a server that uses IP Masquerading.
Version 1.4 connects without problems while the 1.6 versions do not. Bearshare 2.2.6 also manages to connect.
I am running Win2000.

I hope you can find and remove that nasty bug soon.

no connect 1.6b

Same here. 1.6b no connect though 1.4 does fine. I am on win 2k as well. I tried to reinstall and still no go.

Installing

I can't get as far as connecting, because the program will not install. All goes well till I get the message "Limewire is now installing the Java2TM Runtime Environment, v 1.3.1. This may take a few minutes. Please wait." I wait and wait, and nothing happens. Sometimes it doesn't even get that far - I receive the error message:

'An installation support file "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\[bb2943f9-0cc5-4da2-95fe-b5c6e41eb03e}\j2re-1_3_1-win.exe" could not be installed. Access is denied.'

I have tried running from current location and saving then running, same result. And the problem is that I had to remove v 1.4 before I could even try to install. Is that useable version still available anywhere?

crohrs August 4th, 2001 08:32 AM

need connection info

To the people who say they can't connect with 1.6x:

When you start up your LimeWire and go to the Connections tab, does anything appear there? If so what?

If the answer is no, here's an experiment to try:
<ol>
<li>Go to the connections tab.
<li>Make sure "Keep this many connections" is set to 3.
<li>Make sure LW has no connections up. (If it's trying some, delete them.)
<li>Press "clear" on the HostCatcher, in the bottom right corner.
<li>Type in "gnutellahosts.com" and press "add".
<li>Tell me what happens. Does it connect to gnutellahosts.com? Do addreses fill up in the bottom right corner? You can also repeat the experiment with "router.limewire.com".
</ol>

kiriuja: thanks for the limewire.props file. I was hoping it was a configuration issue, but I don't see any problems. Hopefully the above experiment will resolve the problem.

James,

Do you have space on your C: drive? Maybe you don't have room to install the JVM.

Hi Greg

Yes, I have plenty of space - 40GB on C: drive and 75GB on D: and E: (partitioned). I am running Windows 98, with 256 MB.

No, nothing appears in the grid window that's supposed to show hosts it's connected to or is trying to connect to.

> If the answer is no, here's an experiment to try: ...

I tried the experiment. Still nothing shows up in the grid window. That is, the Add button has no effect.

To the OS/X guy:

We just tried the 1.6d installer on our OS/X machine and it worked just fine. Are you positive you downloaded the whole thing? Did you run it by double-clicking? Did the error message contain "Main" or "main"? (Case matters here.) Any other information you can offer?

hi chris, i've downloaded it three times with different browsers on Macosx, it's still a no go. I ran it by double clicking it. The error message is "Main".
I got an imac 400mhz 320 ram and osx ver.10.0.4.

Mac OS X 1.6d Issue

I also had the same problem with LimeWire 1.6d for OS X. I decided to open the package contents, and under Contents/Resources I noticed that a line in MRJApp.properties was different in the beta than the 1.6b release. The line:

com.apple.mrj.application.classpath=/Users/limewire/Desktop/LimeWire6d/LimeWire.jar:/Users/limewire/Desktop/LimeWire6d/collections.jar

should be:

com.apple.mrj.application.classpath=Contents/Resources/Java/LimeWire.jar:Contents/Resources/Java/collections.jar

Everything worked after making that change. There was another line that was different:
com.apple.mrj.application.main=a.a.a.b.Main
is now
com.apple.mrj.application.main=com.limegroup.gnute lla.gui.Main

but I think that's how it should be. The line I changed; however, definitely seems to be the issue as it gives the path to the jar files and everything appears to work after making the change.

Oh, and one more thing. I tried posting this under my registration (iammanta), but it said I didn't have permission to post. I can post fine as Unregistered though. Interesting....

Hope this helps.

Did you confirm your e-mail address be clicking on the link in the e-mail that vBulletin sent you?

themanta August 6th, 2001 06:18 PM

No I didn't as I had not checked my e-mail since registering and I was automatically logged into the site. It appears everything is working now that I have. Thanks for the info.

As for LimeWire 1.6d, everything seems to work since I made the change I noted previously; however the occasional crash on startup seems to have returned. I didn't have the problem under 1.6b, but I'm having it now. Other than that, no issues.

Macos x limewire 1.6d problem is fixed!

thanks themanta, it did the trick...
i wonder why limewire group hadn't found this issue before?

SNIPES August 6th, 2001 10:01 PM

i dono if ya care but i still get the ikernal error. it has to be a problem with the installer or some ****. i just cant get it installed and im real mad at it now...lol.:mad: :mad: :mad: :mad:

anti-bearshare August 6th, 2001 11:32 PM

I have just downloaded LimeWire 1.6d and it works great.
If you cant get it to work than 99.9% of the time you did something wrong. All versions of LimeWire have worked on my system. Windows 98se........

Keep up the good work guys. Why dont you make the LimeWire Logos bigger on the shirt?

afisk August 7th, 2001 12:25 PM

As I mentioned in another post, I just spoke with InstallShield support regarding the Ikernel.exe issue, and they pointed me towards a document that outlines trouble shooting steps for this problem. The InstallShield document reads:

Summary

I am getting one of the following errors during setup initialization:

Error extracting support files
Error installing Ikernel.exe (0x any number)
Access is denied
Error loading Type Library/DLL

Discussion

Setup initialization errors can be caused by a number of factors. This is a non-exhaustive list of possible resolutions:

1. Insufficient permissions on the machine. If you are using a Windows NT or a Windows 2000 machine, you need to have administrative permissions to run an InstallShield Professional 6.x setup. Make sure you have the correct permissions.

2. If you just ran an InstallShield setup, the engine takes a few seconds at the end of the installation to clean up. During this time Ikernel.exe (the engine file) is running in memory from a previous process; that is why you are not allowed to launch another setup. Waiting a few seconds and running the setup again should resolve this.

3. Check and make sure Ikernel.exe is not in memory; if it is, and no setup is running at the time, end that task.

4. Clean the temp directory.

5. Delete the Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Engine folder and then rerun the setup.

6. Reinstalling IE 5.x can also repair a number of corrupted/missing core windows files from your machine, so reinstalling IE 5.x and the NT service pack is also suggested.

7. Another possibility is that you do not have sufficient COM permissions. For information on how to troubleshoot this see article Q104986, INFO: Initialization Error Troubleshooting.

8. The other potential cause is a missing Stdole32.tlb file. This is a core Windows file and should exist on your machine. Make sure that you if you get this file from another machine, the machine is running the same operating system as the target machine.

9. Download and run DCom98.exe from the following site: http://www.microsoft.com/com/dcom/dcom98/download.asp

Does following any of these steps enable your install to work?

afisk August 7th, 2001 12:31 PM

We have also updated the LimeWire 1.6d beta for OSX, so that should be working correctly now. Please let us know if there are any more problems with it.

Beta 1.6d

This works fine on my computer. I have upgraded to IE 5.5 so I have the crucial DLL's that would be missing, I had Limewire download the Java Runtime files required, etc. It works fine.

LimeWire 1.6d for Mac OS X is good

Just wanted to let you know that I downloaded the latest OS X version of 1.6d and everything is working good. I was online for about 3 hours yesterday evening and downloaded and uploaded a nice good amount. The only issue I've seen is the return of the crash of first run bug. I didn't have this problem with 1.6b, and it's now back in 1.6d. I've tried the latest version on two machines, a new iBook and a old Beige G3 266MHz MT both running Mac OS X 10.0.4. Hopefully the GUI performance will improve when 10.1 is release, but network performance seems to be fine. Thanks for all the hard work, and I really appreciate the attention given to make a version of LimeWire that takes advantage of the Java integration in Mac OS X.

Thanks
