LimeWire 1.7 beta available

The <a href="http://www.limewire.com/index.jsp/download_beta">beta version of LimeWire 1.7</a> is now available for download. New features in this release include

<ul>
<li>Ability to chat with other LimeWire users who are downloading or uploading from you, or returning search results.
<li>Fixed major performance bug involving DNS lookup. This is especially important for Mac users.
<li>Option to filter low-quality search results
<li>Redesigned options window
<li>Quicker auto-connect
<li>Support for incoming Gnutella 0.6 connections with headers. This will allow for painless future protocol changes.

</ul>

Please let us know of any problems. Thanks for your help.

Sincerely,
LimeWire team

Can't get 1.7 beta to run on Mac OS X

I tried running the 1.7 beta on Mac OS X and the only thing that happens is the icon shows in the Dock. I also get this console message.

I'm running Mac OS X (10.0.4) and have installed the Java 3.1 Developer Preview 2 for Mac OS X which includes Java 2 SE 1.3.1. This was released on June 27 and is available as a free download if you register at http://developer.apple.com

I think I can downgrade to the 1.3 version of java with a little (maybe a lot) of effort as the 1.3 files are still installed on the system. Let me know if I should try that.

Upload?

Upload stuff seems to be broken.
I've get quite often "couldn't connect".
With LimeWire1.6d there are constantly 4 uploads running, with 1.7beta uploads are very rarely (same settings)

.. sorry. Uploading is working.

Unregistered September 8th, 2001 05:42 AM

Chat

Chat will be available as a right click menu option over search results that come from a LimeWire 1.7 or higher user. Plus others if we get this mechanism broadly adopted.

Chat 2

Or to be precise:

Please try the LimeWire 1.7 beta. The new version of LimeWire includes the ability to chat with other LimeWire 1.7 users who you are downloading from or who are uploading from you. You can also chat with other LimeWire 1.7 users who are supplying search results to you. In addition, the new version includes the ability to only show search results of the qualities and speeds that you specify.

Gnutella Protocol Specification

I know the current Gnutella Protocol is version 0.4. Whats with the support for 0.6 as in where did 0.5 go? When will your Ping Pong Scheme be implemented into the Gnutella network and LimeWire? I'm waiting for the list of improvements planned for the gnutella network after the Gnutella Community Meeting.

gbildson September 8th, 2001 11:17 AM

Gnutella 0.5 was defined as extensions in the field as of Feb, 2001. That includes QHD and recommendations for basic flow control(message prioritation and dropping), etc.

Gnutella 0.6 currently only requires the new Connection HandShake. We will have an alpha version of Ping/Pong and Query Routing out next week.

I'm running LimeWire Linux on FreeBSD. The option window appears to large for the screen and I cant resize it. When I move the window around LimeWire freezes and I have to kill it.

antbearshare September 8th, 2001 12:05 PM

I fixed it I had to edit window_x and app_width in the props file.

For the people who have had problems with OSX, are you guys trying to run LimeWire from the terminal window, or are you double-clicking on the LimeWire icon that gets installed when you double-click on the LimeWire OSX download?

Thanks.

Unregistered September 10th, 2001 10:17 AM

Osx

I double-click.... and i get a stalled application with the console message above.

afisk September 10th, 2001 01:47 PM

We have updated the OSX download for 1.7 beta. Is it working for everyone now? Thanks.

Unregistered September 10th, 2001 02:04 PM

Does 1.7 Mac have fix?

I have many people ask me if the installer for Mac has a fix. Apparently, (this only happens on a few machines) nothing happens and there are just some files that are moved to the trash.

IA JavaInstaller-folder cotains the folders
InstallerData:
- IAClasses.zip
- Installer.zip
- InstallScript.data
- lax.jar
- uninstallmanifest.txt

and MacOS:
- LimeWireMac
- LimeWireMac.lax
- mnlmb
- sea_loc.

This is Mac OS 9 and 128 MBs RAM +

Is this fixed now? I'd like to give people a solution, or at least direct them to an updated version.

new OS X version works fine

The new version of 1.7 beta for OS X appears to be working fine for me. Thanks for the quick update.

1.7

imac user: 1.7 put me right where I was with earlier versions, sharing tons of stuff! I like the new features. The freeloader issue was addressed, and talking to other people has moved limewire to the next level. Thanks y'all!

Chat option

Do I just start highlighting and right-clicking? What signs tell me 1.7 is being used by other limeys ? Grasseazz

TruStarwarrior September 10th, 2001 10:43 PM

I think so. I haven't found anyone else using it so far, though. I hope there is some kind of symbol or icon.

crohrs September 11th, 2001 11:52 AM

finding chattable people

Yes, right now you just have to right click and see if the "Chat with host" option pops up. You can do this from search results, uploads, or downloads.

I agree that some sort of icon or other indication is needed to find chattable people. No promisies, but we'll almost certainly do that for the next release.

Regarding the Mac installer, I would suspect that people are attempting to use the installer that does not contain a JVM even though they do not already have the JVM present on their machines.

The primary LimeWire 1.7 installer for the Mac includes an updated MRJ, version 2.2.5, that has important improvements, but that is also a bit larger than previous versions. This pushed the installer size up to about 11MB. We decided to give people the option to use that installer without the MRJ in case they already had it installed. This installer, however, will not work if they do not already have the MRJ. I am not positive what will happen in this case, but it is quite likely that the scenario that you described would occur.

That said, we also did upgrade the Mac installer to use a new version of InstallAnywhere from ZeroG (version 4.01 as opposed to 3.5). This should, however, be more stable than previous versions. The previous installer had problems on some systems, but this one should be more successful.

Do you know if people are having problems with the installer that includes the MRJ, the installer without the MRJ, or both?

Thanks.

TruStarwarrior September 12th, 2001 10:09 PM

Mac Installer

I am not sure if they were using the new MRJ, an old version, or none at all. This question has popped up several times on the board before, and every time, the question has gone unanswered. It came to my attention again when this post appeared.

http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...&threadid=3382

All of the people who posted were unregistered, so I doubt we'll be able to contact them directly. ¿Maybe we could post a reply to the thread asking them to give us info about their MRJ? If they do visit the boards frequently, then they might see it and respond with the info you need to discern the cause of the problem. Just a suggestion, though. :-)

shelleydave September 12th, 2001 10:34 PM

Sorry, I don't mean to be ignorant, but i'm running9.2, i'm assuming the runtime for java is up to date. I guess depending on what system people are running will determine if things are cool or not. Is that correct. (or if they use the software update application.) I downloaded the version not needing an MRJ update and it works great for me. (for what that's worth)

TruStarwarrior September 12th, 2001 10:43 PM

Thank you for your response. Hopefully, we'll be able to figure out this problem soon. If you don't mind, I'd like to aska a few questions:

Have you used program that would have already installed an updated version of MRJ? Do both 1.6 and 1.7 beta behave the same way on your system?

Thanks again! :-)

afisk September 13th, 2001 07:56 AM

I posted to the thread that you mentioned. It looks like most of the people posting were probably using the 1.6d installer from the dates of their posts. We have definitely had problems with those InstallAnywhere 3.5 installers on different Mac configurations, but we were hoping that the IA 4.01 version (the version we're using in LimeWire 1.7) would work a little bit better.

The tricky part here is that we're really doing the simplest install possible, so if the installer fails, there's really not much we can do about it except wait until InstallAnywhere releases an updated version (which they will be doing fairly shortly).

Hopefully, however, people will not have problems with the new installer.

shelleydave September 13th, 2001 11:32 AM

I have yet to have any problems installing any version of Limewire. 1.7 seems to run a little smoother on my computer. With 1.6d, I had some problems with 5-10 second freezes where everything would stop for a minute. After boosting the memory to 40k, it did seem to help the situation. I have yet to encounter any freezes with 1.7.

afisk September 13th, 2001 12:02 PM

That's great to hear. We fixed a problem in previous versions of LimeWire where we were doing unnecessary dns lookups on new incoming connections, which could freeze on the Mac in the manner you specified.

We changes this code, so hopefully it will not occur in the future. It can still freeze initially on startup because there are some required dns lookups that we have to do, but other than that it should be fixed. Please let us know if you see freezing occurring again in the middle of a LimeWire session.

how do i download ver 1.7 ?

TruStarwarrior September 15th, 2001 12:57 AM

Go here and click on your operating system version.

http://www.limewire.com/index.jsp/download_beta

If it doesn't work correctly (you get a broken quicktime movie file icon), then right click the download and say "Save Target As."

Mac Errors -39 and -2

Here are a few more mac problems I can't solve.

A person in post 4 is getting an error type -39 when installing the beta version.

http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...0562#post10562

Also, many people have reported getting error -2. Is this a memory issue?

If anyone knows what these errors mean, I would greatly appreciate it if they posted the definitions here. Thanks!

shelleydave September 16th, 2001 08:37 AM

Code: -39
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Error: eofErr
Description: Logical End of File reached during read (File System Error)

Code: -2
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Error: vTypErr
Description: Invalid Queue Element

I hope this helps some.

Please please fix the 17 for OS 9.x too. It can't be true that I need to turn off system extensions to run it, not to mention reinstall the application after each reboot.
