Beta

What is beta and what's the dif between beta versions and regular?

snaf July 29th, 2005 06:59 PM

Sorry, I have the pro beta and don't understand the dif. I am new to this stuff.

Grandpa July 29th, 2005 08:36 PM

Beta versions are versions that are being tested they have fixes for previous issues and new features, But havent been thouroughly tested yet for problems that may arrise. The regular release versions are tested versions that have been somewhat proven to work on most sysetms. If you are not familiar with LimeWire I do nor recomend that you run a beta version becaus there may be problems that no one knows the answers to yet.

I currently have 4.9.11 beta because as far as I know the newest regular pro version is 4.8.1. On the basic, I noticed there is 4.9.11 beta and 4.9.11 regular. My bookmarked pro download page will only show 4.8.1 as the current version unless I click on the "beta available" icon. Then it shows 4.9.11 as the current beta. Is this all correct or is there a more current regular version of pro. And what is the dif between the basic 4.9.11 regular and 4.9.11 beta? If they are the same version ,what's different?

snaf July 30th, 2005 12:46 PM

BETA

By the way the reason I got the beta version even though I am inexperienced is because the 4.8.1 pro I was using kept getting errors and shutting down. It would also keep dropping connections after 10 - 30 seconds for each connection. Then finally it would say that I had no internet connection.

Grandpa July 30th, 2005 01:31 PM

The new beta may and may not fix your problem. It sounds like a Java isue to me but I dont know for shure. If you could read the thread below there is alot of good information in it. And the more info you can provide when writeing a thread the better the chances of solving the problem. IE

O/S Windows 98/2000/XP
CPU P43.0/AMD 3200+
Memory 256/512
LimeWire Verson 4.8.1/4.9.11
Java Version 1.4.*/1.5.*
connection Type Dial up/Cable
Firewall Type Norton/Windows
Router make & model
any error messages and a good description of what is happening you have a good start there and it appears that you are trying to figure out the problem yourself if you need any more help try using above sugistions and I or someone else will help if we can.

BETA

Thank you very much for your help and suggestions. I actually don't need help with any problems anymore though. Since I started using 4.9.11 beta, I've had no problems. I am still waiting for answers from the post I had made three posts ago from three posts ago, that would be awesome.

This is the post I was talking about. I don't understand what you mean by search for the old post. It is on this same page. Just scroll up seven posts from this one when you are on this page. But anyway here it is. Granpa, you only answered part of the original question, but this is the important part.

The reason I did not answer the other was I wasn't clear on what you were asking. There is no 4.9.11 that is not a beta that I know of. The difference between pro and regular is with pro you get 5 and regular you get 4 connections in leaf mode, which give you better search results and most of the time better DL speeds. Due to the fact you usually get more people to DL from depending on the popularity of the file. Obviously if it is a very popular file the regular LW will get as many connections because there are allot of people with the file who will be available to DL from. In ultrapper mode I really haven't noticed much difference between the too.

There is one thing some people say they notice no difference between pro and regular I have a feeling allot of these people are using dial-up. And with dial-up you are only going to get X amount of kb download due to bandwidth limitations of dial-up no matter how many people are connected to you. And people using dial-up should never connect as an ultrapper it will majorly affect your ability to download.

Hope this answers your question.

Thank you very much for responding Grandpa1. But subsequently, I still am wondering what the newest version of PRO is that is not BETA.

Grandpa1 August 3rd, 2005 07:00 PM

4.8.1 but I dont know if you can find it.

deacon72 August 3rd, 2005 07:25 PM

I think that 4.9.11 is now official and 4.9.13 is the currant BETA

Grandpa1 August 3rd, 2005 07:29 PM

Guess I should have looked before I answered.

Snafu2dj August 3rd, 2005 09:01 PM

Thankyou very much guys. You've been very helpful. On a sidenote for whatever it's worth, the new version of PRO, 4.9.11, (which I've just downloaded and installed, Thanks Deacon) does not let you change filenames in the library. It always says that the file is in use by another application when it's not. I know I can still do it with windows explorer though. I apologize in advance if this is the wrong place to bring that up. I just thought I'd let you guys know.:D :) :D

i have noticed this problem too, even though no other app is using it, and limewire is not uploading it.

deacon72 August 4th, 2005 03:23 PM

I thought it was just me and my WinDoze setup. I eventually get it changed though. Got more trouble than that though with 4.9.13. Look in my later Post for more troubles.
