How do you know if you are a "leaf" or an "ultrapeer"?
 

I have looked throught the posts on the Ultrapeer and haven't seen anything that addresses this. Granted it was not an exhaustive search and nobody said I was smarter than a bag of hammers. I have been using LW v1.7 with no problems. I have just upgraded to LM v2.0.4. I understand what an ultrapeer is but how do I know if I am am an ultrapeer or a leaf (I have an ADSL). Also on v1.7 I could see how many users, files and total Bytes that were available.. All I show now is the number of files I am sharing and the banner ad (btw: I don't mind the ad). I am currently connected to 8 hosts on the ultrapeer protocol and I have [client] next to "Keep approximately _ connections up". As with others, I have also noticed that I do not get the same amount of returns on searches as I did with v1.7.

Any insight would be appreciated.

1. Activate the Connections screen by opening the View pull-down menu, then re-enabling Connections.

2. In the Connections screen you will see your Gnutella "role" listed in the lower left corner; this normally says [Leaf]. Do not confuse this with the connection-type listed for the external hosts you're communicating with. Normally, you'll only see one connection listed and it'll be labeled Ultrapeer.

If you have a faster-than-modem connection and you stay on-line for more than a day or two, you'll switch from Leaf-mode to Ultrapeer-mode and your Connections screen will fill-up with other Ultrapeers and 0.4-type hosts plus up to 50 Leafs (who are subordinate to you).

FYI - I think there's a bug that prevents you from properly disabling Leaf/Ultrapeer mode.

You cant disable Leaf/Ultrapeer mode. Chris has already made it clear there are only two modes, Leaf or Ultrapeer.

Mine does not have leaf anywhere on the connections page. The only thing it has is [client]. I'll try running it for several days to see what happens.

Are you sure? I would have thought that [Client] mode meant you were acting as a traditional 0.4 Gnutella servent. I've been an Ultrapeer so long I don't remember, but I thought the new Limewire started out saying [Leaf]. If you select the option for "Disable Ultrapeer", then I thought you would always be in [Client] mode but that there was a bug that prevented you from connecting to more than one other host, i.e. you'd still act like a leaf.

Anyway, there's a new version that changes a lot of the Ultrapeer/Leaf "tuning" so it's going to be moot soon.

No. Its never said Leaf for me and I've been connected to an Ultrapeer for 5 days straight, well back when 1.9 was released. How many times do I have to say the versionf 1.9+ of LimeWire only have a Leaf and Ultrapeer mode! If you're not an Ultrapeer, you're a Leaf. There is no "Normal" (as with >1.9) mode. The "Disable Ultrapeer" option is to disable you from becoming an Ultrapeer if you decided to do so. That wasnt the bug, the problem was the connectivity between Ultrapeers and other Ultrapeers. Now 2.1.0 has resolved that problem. You maintain multiple Ultrapeers so if one dropped you're able to recover more quickly and still have a pretty good horizon. There were also some things fixed about the TTL and so forth.
