Files allowed for sharing

Hello,

In LimeWire, one can choose which files from the gallery are downloadable for other P2P users. Files that are not shared become red in the media gallery. A question about that feature: where does LimeWire stores that information (which file?).

Another question. If one checks the option that all downloaded files are shareable, but the extension list for file types that are allowed to share and the shared folder path(s) are empty. Does LimeWire shares the downloaded files still?

Thank you for any clues!

This information is stored in the LW preferences folder.

As for shareable extensions, you can add your own if they are not listed. Check this under Sharing options.

As for which things you share, you have a few options.

1. By default you can choose to share your download folder, by default called Shared. (I personally only share folders within my download folder after I have checked the files out. But I also share folders from many other parts of my computer. Around 2,000 files in all.) You can more folders to share from your computer.

2. You can choose to share downloads immediately that have finished downloading (Share Finished Downloads) (as compared to waiting until next time you open LW or add them manually by right-clicking them from library. (Personally I prefer to check my downloads are ok so I don't use this option. However it is good for the network for people who have been downloading partial shares & the last part of the file is immediately available to those people to finish downloading immediately. Many people complain the last few % of a file is difficult to download as it seems it is not available. Having people share files immediately helps solve this issue.

3. Share Partial files. This means that as you are downloading files, others are able to upload parts that you have already downloaded. Partial file sharing greatly increases the efficiency of sharing & downloads. If you ever notice your downloads suddenly slow down or become zero speed, it is often because you are waiting for someone else to download more of the file you are downloading or else, since they are broken into packets, it may take a small amount of time to find the next available packet that's being shared. Partial file sharing is good because it means many more people can download the same file at the same time & people are queued much less.

In your LW Library window, you can see what files are being shared. If there are any files you don't wish shared, right-click (control-click for Mac users) them & choose stop sharing. Files that are not being shared will be RED in colour.
