Updating LimeWire - What are the Pros & Cons ?

LW just asked me if I'd like to upgrade to version 4.14 or the newest LW available. It sounds good and all, but if I have to pay for this upgrade it's not worth it as my current version is working fine. Please advise as soon as possible. The notice says:

Recharge today with the new Limewire 4.14
*Removes junk from your results
*BitTorrent support
*DHT technology for reliable downloads
*Faster download speeds
...all this and more in Limewire 4.14!

If anyone updated and then had problems please let me know.

Thank you,
Andrew Perkins

I would advise you to do an extensive read within these forums re: threads and posts on the merits and problems associated with upgrading LimeWire.

I do not mean to say that you should not perform an upgrade but, that it would be wise to get some background before you decide... Make especial note of any problems that others have had regarding older Operating Systems and Java installations !

btw, the updates should be free unless you are updating an older Pro version.
Never part with any money for any offered version of LimeWire that is NOT a Pro version.

Well, everyone, I updated to 4.14, and even though it doesn't have the turbo-charged results of LW Pro, it has more pros than cons. For those who find that downloads seem way too slow should check the TLS box. All in all it's up to you to determine if it works better or gets torrent files you couldn't get before. It might be wise to save your money as I'm sure there will be a Pro version for 4.14; it's probably being tested and created even as we speak.

Thanks for your help,
Andrew Perkins

I updated my LimeWire.
It has worked well for me. Ive noticed that the spam problem is getting better.
But a big pro for me is that it seems a bit lighter on my system. But that just could be my computer.

Wow! Just checked connections tab and found out that there are 29 peers and 26 leaves. Guess I should filter out some of the hosts; problem is I don't know which ones to remove from the connections list. It's nice to have so many hosts but if some are brick walls there's no point in keeping them on the list.

Keep me posted,

I would upgrade if I were you, but however, some people are having problems with 4.14. Search around the forums. Some people might have the same computer or similar computer as you and have problems. If your system is fine with it, then you should upgrade. There is less spam. And many other improvements.

Don't filter them out, your running as an Ultrapeer, otherwise you would only be seeing 3 hosts for basic or 5 for Pro...

When you run as a Ultrapeer it means your connection is good enough to do the job...You are a chosen one..:p

I have also recently upgraded and now realise why I have a problem with the alphabetical listing of my saved downloads.

Some 12 months ago when I removed Limewire from my computer and reinstalled it I found that my saved downloads from that point on all went on to a second alphabetical listing.

Since the recent up grade this has happened again.I transfer my downloads to an external hard drive and now have 3 alphabetical listings making it a hassel to find things.Files are listed A to Z,followed by a second grouping of A to Z and then a 3rd A to Z.

If someone can advise how I can alter my list so that all files are in 1 group of A to Z,I would be most appreciative.

I updated to lw 4.14

Just wanted to say that I paid for the update. My 4.12 was also working fine but I fell for the promise of faster downloads, GEEEEEEEEEZ what a mistake!!
LW 4.14 loads and starts to download then freezes and you can't even turn the blasted thing off!! This happens EVERY time you start the app. It really sucks as now I can't download anything and I PAID for it!!

IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME GO BACK PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!

It's probably just a Java issue try this...

Uninstall all versions of Java from the add/remove programs and then re-install the JRE 5.11 offline version....
Archive: Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Update 11

If that does not help with your problem try deleting your preference folder/s...This will reset your configurations back to default and get rid of any corruption that may of happened...;)

Wondering, this is in regards to being an ultrapeer; I've noticed downloads slow to almost a snail's pace when I'm an ultrapeer. It's great to have so many leaves, hosts and peers but if some specific connections slow download time is it really so great? It could be, and probably is that certain host addresses should be filtered out because they aren't as good as others. For example, if the I/O column registers in thousands logic suggests these are faster hosts as opposed to hundreds and doubles registers. Just curious, what's the highest and best number for maximum downloads? Currently, I've set mine at 125, but I also have set it to 150 and 175.

A good Ultrapeer is doing more or less nothing except being a good Ultrapeer...

The system is very much dependent on Ultrapeers NOT actually participating in sharing !

That may seem more than a bit contrary to many people but, it's the way it really is !

Any bandwidth that an Ultrapeer uses for personal sharing activity diminishes the total available bandwidth for Ultrapeer processes and responsibilities.

For me... When I see an host as Ultrapeer sharing anything more than about 1-200 MB, I blow 'em out.
I want high performance Ultrapeers !!!

Now the arguing can start.......................

wondering why October 5th, 2007 03:14 PM

Magic25...I disabled my Ultrapeer capabilities as it drains my computer to much, I found that surfing the net or even loading pages on the forum took to long...;)

If you find it is draining your system to much disable it...

Tools > Options > Performance and tick the box that says Disable Ultrapeer Capabilities and select apply....

Except for losing my Pro version I haven't found any cons to 14.14.10
Several features make it better than the old Pro though, it's a trade off

CLASSYSOB October 5th, 2007 11:21 PM

I upgraded and lost my "pro" status. did you update, and did you lose it, too? If so, do you know how to get the pro status back?

wondering why October 6th, 2007 02:20 AM

ATTENTION: LW Pro users!! Update info!!

Your Pro upgrade is only good for six months.
If it's been longer and you want it back you have to pay.

Lord of the Rings October 6th, 2007 10:37 AM

They recently introduced an extended 12 month Pro period for not much more (over each 6 month period averages out to about same as old pro 6 month price). And during the last month of support, they offer a discount to continue with support. But to know about this, you need to check your personal pro download page. You should BOOKMARK your personal pro download page so you can access it easily & quickly & check to see if your support is nearing an end. ;)

Wondering, this is not related to the topic but what port setting would you say is the best for someone who has a Westell Wirespeed modem as I do? I cannot go over 65000 so I've been setting it to 30000. As long as ports don't exceed the limit they can be set in a broad range. I could even set the port at the default level but there's got to be a better alternative. There may be better ports in the 20-30000 range which will be better, but if anyone has this same setup and found a better range please be sure to let me know. Sorry to deviate from the main topic, just had this thought that maybe a little tweaking in the port department might equal better LW performance.

Thank you,
Andrew Perkins

wondering why October 6th, 2007 01:19 PM

I'm not to sure what port would be the exact one, I think it's more a trial and error type situation...A popular choice is 64049...;)

tml74047 October 6th, 2007 07:37 PM

That is what happend to me. I updated my pro and got regular then RE bought pro & thats when the problems started.
Just curious:one of you all told me I should get the new java (which I did) but noticed when I was removing the old one that my computer says I rarely used it anyway. So I wonder what good it will do for LW if I get the new one? Maybe I have not ever been doing something that I should have. Does that even make since? I mean should I be using java ?? Thanks

michwayne October 6th, 2007 07:46 PM

hi tml not sure I understand the question but you defanetly need java to run limewire also did the new java fix your problem?

Magic25 October 7th, 2007 01:14 PM

Wondering, is there any way to get more outgoing connections than incoming? And are there any host ip's that I should remove-ones that are of no benefit and slow down results from the fast ones. Being an Ultrapeer is a good thing-I figure the slow speed we get from search results comes from having ip's that should be filtered out.
I asked this before, but what is the highest number of maximum downloads that you have set? Currently I have 125 set, and have also done 150 and 175. It seems to me that the higher the number the more results you can get in one pass. And on that same note, the Get More Sources should be automatically triggered after a search ends so that we don't have to manually do it.

It is recommended to delete your LW preferences folder before upgrading to Pro; Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Point #2 & 3 in Fixes for Limewire (sample image included at bottom of page.)
Java is necessary for Pro to operate. However many pro users had problems with Java 1.6 so it has been recommended to downgrade Java to 1.5. See instructions & java 1.5 link in point #1 in my link above. ;)

Go to Tools > Options > Advanced > Performance & disable Ultrapeer mode. :)

Here's yet another question that does not relate to the original thread. In the search window when the Location tab is added there are host ip's that are in red. Are these bogus and should I filter them out?
