[techies in] Lime on a key

Hi guy, I got fed up of lime slowing down my machine and constantly stressing my HD for what, half an megabyte a second , so I decided to get a fast USB2.0 key on which I installed lime 4.16.6. So that the slow flow of data form the internet gets from my RAM to my key directly. And then, when the files are completey downloaded , to stores them on my HD once and for all

So my situation is :

WinXP Home
CPU and Chpiset are intel Celeron and Intel 82865
WinXP installed on my HD
Lime installed on my USBkey 4gigas and runing from there right now

Now what I want :

1) Put the folder for my Complete downloads on my HD . (that's easy I know) ...
Reason 1 : my key is only 4gigas, i don't want it to be filled by files because the acces times and bandwidth get down when the disc gets full.
Reason 2 : It can get full really fast and I don't want to check on my computer and manually move files all the time.

2) ... while my folder for Incomplete downloads is on my Key.

BUT the option windows if LimeWire ( I'm french sorry for the mistakes) only shows "destination for the Complete folder" and automatically defines the incomplete one on my c:\program files, and I couldn't find any key entry in my windows register that can cahnge that ...

Soooo : do you guys got any ideas ?

Thx :)

I tried loading Limewire on C: and storing all files on D: - Limewire won't let me. It does let me put everything (including Incomplete) on D:\program files.

I hope you find the solution you're seeking. I really like your idea of using a flash drive, instead of more wear and tear on the hard drive.

By the way, you should never feel that you must apologize for being French!

Ok something goes wrong with this system , I need to talk with the programmers, do you know where I can find them ?

I think this idea is quite good too but either windows or lime doesn't like it.

I tested my key and it is really slow with the transfert of small bits of data (like 250 ko/s or something) It is good with the bigger bits. So I need Lime to create packets of data that it keeps on the physical RAM (NOT on the swap I mean) , like 1 Mega or so, and send it in bursts on the incomplete file on my key.
But the thing is : I don't know if there is a direct channel going from RAM directly to USB. Neither do I know through what data from the net arrive, if it comes directly on my HD instead of coming on my Ram then all this is useless and we need a re-programming of lime. (and I don't know how to program) It is possible that for optimization of the Ram space , lime stores it on the virtual Ram , the one on the HD ...

Soooo !!

I need to reconfigure swap parameters and put it on my i: .... maybe will it work.

I'll tell you that

WE NEED A PROGRAMMER GUYS !

Man , with the swap file defined on my Corsair Key, it just rocks.
The HD led hardly ever lights, no sounds going out of the HD.
I bet well when I said the programmers had defined the storing place on the virtual Ram HDswap

So now to perfect the stuff I need the programmers to allow us to define the Incomplete and the complete folder separately.
After they get this done, I think we will have to optimize a bit the work of transfert from the incompleteKey to the completeHD.
I don't know the exact functionning of the USB Bus or the Key's interface, but I bet that simultaneous incoming/outcoming data might be tricky (Oooooooooooh my god I love silence !!!!!!!! I tell you it's soooo relaxing without this small krrkrkrkrkrkrkrkrkr )

So we need to [wait , I just got the simplest idea in the world]

LordOfWar April 2nd, 2008 12:26 PM

Ok so her is what I just did :
complete folder myKey => myHD
Swap still on myKey.

Here is what I discovered about the lime program :

It by default stores the incoming data on the Swap
every three seconds : it bursts the recieved data - temporarly stored on the swap -
to the incomplete folder (where ever it is)
And when the file is complete if sends it to the complete folder.

Soooo :

config 1 :

Swap directory defined in windows on myKey
Complete folder defined in Lime on Mykey

=> I got no sounds , but my key gets full really fast.

This on is good both for my HD and my own stress, but it is not a sustainable configuration, exept if I can find an other program that drags-drops whatever is in the complete folder into another folder on my HD every time it apears in the complete folder .. (or .. I NEED THE PROGRAMMERS TO LET US DEFINE THE INCOMPLETE AND COMPLETE FOLDERS SEPARATELY !!!!!!!!!)

Config 2 :

Swap on myKey
folders on HD

=> I got "kr" every three seconds.
This one is still better for my HD , but there's no silence and my stress doesn't like it.

I'm telling you guys, this Swap on the key is just a great idea anyway : it's so ****ing silent !

I will install Firefox on it too I think

Ok here is what you do.

some People have been complaining about the new 4.16 taking up too much Cpu while it's runing here is what you do.Click on.This is in Lime Wire.
Tool's>Options>Advanced>Performance>And tick the Disable TLS Capabilities. This will help with the Cpu problem i clicked it off for mine and it only uses about 10% of my Cpu with is 5/10 Cpu.

LordOfWar April 2nd, 2008 03:02 PM

Huh , thx for the tip about the Cpu but ... you know it's written IN the option panel anyway , that's no news

Plus my stuff has nothing to do with cpu usage, it's about HD constantly being stressed by Lime and stressing me with the constant krrrrraking and spoiling the HD

I really like this idea, but unfortunately have no solution to it.

I hope you continue digging and share the results with us.

You might try doing it to an older version though. They were much better.

Do you decompile or work from source? .. or just mess with settings/values in various files?

arne_bab April 3rd, 2008 03:59 AM

I don't know how to do it with LimeWire, but setting this up would be trivial in Phex which also connects to Gnutella (and is written in Java, too):

Just set the incomplete directory to your stick in the startup wizard (or the directories pane in the options).

Phex doesn't buffer downloads in temp, but into ram, and you can adjust these buffers in the Options File, if you want to go into details.

-> Phex - Home

You could also try if just using Phex can reduce the stress on your disks.

Besides: Thanks to Sleepless for pointing me here.
