Default Download Speed

Hi, I was just wondering if the number of uploads I allow, has an effect on my download speed? (I just noticed that my download speed was only about 5kb/sec a moment ago)

In general the more you share back the better your search results & download speeds should be. However, if you have a combined overall upload & download bandwidth with your ISP, then if uploading very fast this might have some affect on your download speeds.

Thanks ContraBanned, I just realized somehow the folder called "Shared" (a subfolder of my "Limewire" folder is empty). I think my question now is how do I change which folder the application displays my shared files from? (Equally important though is to not create a conflict with disrupting where iTunes automatically pulls from since I finally got that right recently.)

iTunes should import ok in any case. Click on the Shared icon on LW & see what's listed & right click on a file listed & choose View File info.. & this will show their location.
I believe the newer LW version does not use a Shared folder by default. Shared files for me in windows XP & Win 7 are either my iTunes music folder (manually added shared files) or in the LW Saved folder.

Can depend on what you're downloading. How much you are sharing. Whether the file is a torrent or gnutella file. Searching more hosts occasionally does help sometimes also.

Ok thank you. I'm not very technical. Can you help me understand what a torrent file is and how I can access it after I download it? Is it an audio file, and is it intended to be converted to an mp3 perhaps? I've seen torrents over the years but never understood them.

Torrents provide a different means for p-p filesharing. The files may be audio, video, text/data, applications, etc. They are usually accessed in the same manner one would use to access any file. (Some torrents are archived in .rar format.)

Torrent downloading is not complicated. Limewire can handle torrents, but does so inefficiently. I recommend uTorrent or Vuze to download torrents (both programs are free).

More info here: Beginners Guide [Re: Firewall - You don't need to establish a static IP or do port forwarding to dl torrents, but you should consider it if you want to max dl speed].

Ok thanks, are those applications connecting to the same available files as Limewire, just with a better ability to download and handle torrent files? (or is a different network..therefore different selection of mp3's as well)?
