Installation failed - "run post flight script"

Tried to install Limewire 5 as downloaded with the package from Gnutella forum. By package I mean the Connect & Security & Limestart etc.

I am running a MacBook Pro with OSX10.8.3

Run the installation and it fails at the end where the following text appears in the box:

The Following installation step failed: run postflight script for Limewire. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance

Does anybody have an idea what I need to do to work around this?

I presume you mean the error occurs at the LW installation process and not the Security installer step?
Does it actually install? I do not have OSX 10.8 (still 10.6) so I am not sure if the original LW installer has any issue with OSX 10.8.
Post-Flight would normally refer to the very last step of installation (probably after the app itself has been installed.) This may refer to a user profile or Java path linking. If Java is not installed then a problem would occur.

I do know OSX 10.8 is not packaged with Java. You will first need to install Java for OSX 10.7 or later before installing LW.

You are correct, it is the last step in the LW install. I have the latest Java installed

Have you checked the Applications folder to see if LW is installed and if it is possible to launch it?

If it will not launch, try a safe boot before reinstalling. ie: Hold the Shift-Key down as you are booting up. (I think MacBooks can be safe-booted.) A safe-boot often takes longer than a standard boot.

Which version of LW 5 are you installing? Chances are I can probably host a ready installed package. To my knowledge, LW is no different to most other program packages, all is inclusive within the program package itself except for user settings. LW does not depend on plug-ins, shared libraries, etc. outside of the program package to my knowledge. Only external dependency is a Java environment.

Edit: I reinstalled LPE. The only file in the program package to show a change of date is the LimeWire.jar file. Other than this, there is a Install LimeWire.pkg file installed into the Receipts folder of the system's Library folder and install listing noted for program identification in InstallHistory.plist in same folder. In your case the script must have failed achieving one of these functions.

LW did make into the Applications folder, but it will not launch. The version is LW5.

Can you advise what difference the safe-boot would make?

Just thought it was worth a shot to see if you could reinstall LW during a safe boot.

I've just got a hold of 10.8 and will install on a virtual drive when I get time to see if I have the same issue.

OK here's my first experience with Mountain Lion 10.8.3.

I installed Java 7. Upon trying to install LW (LPE) it gave a message that it needed Java 6 environment and immediately gave me the option to download and install Java 6. I then continued with the LW installation and all went well. I immediately closed LW, installed the security and opened LW and it connected within about 20 seconds.

Do you have Java 6 installed? It seems LW on MacOSX suffers same issue as Windows and some Linux systems in that it will not run directly with Java 7.

Get a hold of Java 6 and see if that makes a difference. The version it installed for me was Java 1.6.0_45 ... since Oracle took over the Java site it has become an incredibly difficult site to navigate and find anything specific on. I found this answer via a google group discussion: ie: some other apps also do not run under Java 1.7.
About Java for OS X 2013-003 or a zipped file download link is Java for OS X 2013-003 (Java 1.6.0_45 update for OSX 10.7 or later.)

Edit: Safe-boot will turn off all but the most necessary system extensions and disable some support files. Safe-boot can be useful for repairing issues or analysing problems to see if there is a conflict of software, etc. Normally you would not install items after a safe-boot.
You will need to change system settings re: default security for OSX 10.8: sample image.
Perhaps the original script was only set to run in 32-bit I don't know. But you could set the installer to run in 32-bit mode via the installer's information window. 32-bit setting sample image
