Why is LW not telling the truth...

I have the PRO version and when I request a Macintosh program the selections fill up with what should be Macintosh OS X programs.

When I place the cursor over the available downloads it "says" that it is a Mac program.

I select the program for download and wait and wait and wait.

Finally, I unzip or .dmg the file only to discover it is a PC file.

I downloaded about 5 files this morning ( from midnite to 6 AM ) only to find one Mac program the other four were PC.

What am I doing wrong?

Or is this a quirk in LM?

Looks like the source of the file is not telling the truth . . . . there are a lot of spam results out there, so you probably aren't doing anything "wrong."

for mac programs, stick to .dmg's or .sit's. They aren't much used in the Window's world (unlike .zip files).

Lastly, most mac software programs are quite generous in allowing free trials, and are far more reliable from the original developer's website. I would rarely use p2p for finding a reliable mac program, and when I just want to see what's available, the OS X Apple menu's "Mac OS X Software . . . " item allows me to play with lots of interesting programs.

Stief:

Thanks for your reply and interest in my posting.

I also discovered that many downloads are a complete waste of time.

The "cracked" versions are useless without having the original "installer" CD.

Using "serial box" is better then using Limewire.

I sure wasted my money buying the "PRO" version of Limewire because there is no download speed increase. I have highspeed cable and have tried both pro and non pro to download the same file. No difference.

Hi again midiw

Yep--there's quite a flea market of stuff some people share, besides the obviously malware and spam. Serial box is a handy way to see what programs are drawing attention, and the links to the homepages are rather handy.

As for getting Pro, you'll not see a difference on a single download. That will be limited by the host and your connection. Pro searches a bit further into the net, so it's a bit better for finding rare files, and if multiple sources can be found, Pro will download from a few more than the Free (if you have the bandwidth).

Still, the differences are not worth the "cost." I keep getting Pro as a way to donate to the project (it's opensource), and it's a way to thank the devs for all the work they do keeping LW Free and open. They do try to give Pro a bit of an edge, but they rightly want to make the Free as powerful as possible.

Cheers

Stief,

Thanks again for your clarification.

Indeed I purchased the PRO version to support the project also the shareware price was reasonable.

I have the high speed cable internet provider ( same guys that provide my tv cable service ) and with your explanation understand what should happen when I call up for extra resources.

Hi midiw

If you can get a speed test to a major server near you that includes upload speed, like those offered by http://www.dslreports.com/stest , you can tune your Pro's speed settings for optimal results.

For example, if you can achieve >90 KB/s upload speed, then you can set your speed as a T3, which allows you to set the upload speed settings at the minimum allowed for a T3. This would mean a swarmed download with Pro *could* download from 14 sources.

cheers.
