I had the same problem. I just downloaded Windows Media 7 onto Mac and everything works now.

There can be a few solutions to the problem. One of them is knowing how to use the File exchange control panel. For new types of files you need to add them & then add which app(s) should open them. One of the issues is a problem with pre-OSX OS LW dwnld files could lose their identity. For stuffit files that have a white icon, drag & drop is the best way to open them. It can depend on the file type as to what's the best temporary solution for using them. WMP might help solve some of these identity issues but guaranteed not to solve all of them for all file types.

crap, WMP is assisted by Classic Startup but Classic startup wont startup, help me too

I don't completely understand what you wrote. If you're refering to the Classic environmt starting up in OSX, then you cannot adjust the system's settings using the File exchange control panel. I presume you checked my advice in the other thread in OSX about how to startup from OS9 if you have a computer that is able to startup in OS9. There's noticeable difference b/w OS9 & the Classic environmt. One of them I've already mentioned, another is that apps don't always work that well & some utilities won't work at all. So the Classic Env. has a no. of limitations. To set your Classic startup go to OSX's System Preferences & on the last/2nd last row you'll see the Classic OS9 icon. Click this, this is where you can control the setting up of Classic, such as starting up in Classic as soon as you login (or immediately if you have autologin.) Another way to startup Classic is to open any OS9 only file or app. I'm not sure how well LW will run in the classic envt. It might/not work ok. But make sure you have the most recent update of Java for OS9. But I must say, you shouldn't have the file identity problem in OSX/Classic. If you have the appropriate app the will open the files, then there shouldn't be any issue in that regard. Tell me if I haven't answered your problem or you have a further question.

Os 9 doesn't support file with names of more than 32 caracters so it cuts the part with the extension. File without extension and mac identity aren't recongnized. The solution? add .mp3 to the audio files you download in your shared folder (or .txt to text files, etc, etc).

Bonne chance

Excellent point. And hopefully this will solve the issue. But in my experience that doesn't necessarily solve the problem; eg: sit files can still have their extension but lack their appropriate icon (& identity.) My alternative solution was to use a file utility like Mac Army Knife to give the file the correct file type & creator. But we can't expect everybody to be fiddling around with file properties. And perhaps best for the technically minded only. Although MAM is easy to use. Also, in the classic envt. under OSX, the filename length is not necesarily an issue. I just sampled a SimpleText file at 36 char. long. & an aiff with it's extnsion deleted & name extended to 50 char. & was able to open it directly via Sound Edit, an OS9 only audio app. (it's just that the name becomes truncated within the app & for saving purposes. But I'm talking about the classic envt in the latter example.

I still don't know whether he/she (macos9) wants to use Classic or OS9!? I'm not sure they know yet.
