limewire to lan-share across platform
 

:confused: I have a hub, i have a pc and a mac connected to the hub with ethernet cables, i have an ADSL router connected to the hub too, i have both computers installed wif limewire(free) and i was told u could use limewire to lan-share files across platforms at the lan speed (100mb/s). How do I do this?, is there a way my pc can look at my mac shared folder through limewire?, do u have a better program u know of that i can use to lan-share files across platforms?

LW may have automatically done this: each machine needs to run on a separate port. You can check which port each is using by looking through the Preferencess->Bug Reports->View Example

Then just search for a file you know is shared by the other computer. If it should show up quickly as a blue entry, you're set. If not, firewalls and port-forwarding may need attention.

This can get technical, so let me know if I'm being too simplistic or obscure.

To ensure each Limewire to use its own port, set the Mac [OSX?] to, say, port 6346 (set in Preferences->Advanced->Port, and Firewall). See that the PC [?] uses something else (like 6348, for example).

An alternative is to use any client that permits you to 'manually' enter a "Connect" address...
In other words, you may 'exclude' other 'hosts' and connect directly with a specific IP address of your choosing...
There are no limits as far as minimums or maximums... From 2 IPs to as many as you want... A private 'net' within the Gnutella Network... OR out of it... No need to be enabled to connect to the internet... Most p2p clients will be quite happy just talking to other p2p clients... They don't really care WHERE they meet !

This is called 'direct connecting'.
(Not to be confused with Direct Connect - DC - 'hub system'...)

Doing Direct Connects in Gnutella Network clients is normally easy to do and a very instructive experience.

Just don't even think about being crazy enough to do it without some IM / IRC contact...

Ok, I dont have first clue about p2p except to download stuff. Is there a way i can say, see his hard drive and what it contains through LW, the mac has OS 9.2.2. I mean i dont want to search for each seperate file, that could take years... I want to be able to take entire folders from my mac to this pc. Please explain eveything really simply plz

I mean i dont even know where to find this preferences folder or wateva.

You can see the Preferences (on OSX) in The LW Menu Tools->Options on the Mac or PC (which version of Windows?).

If (big if) you can see one file, you can click on it and use "Browse Host" to see up to 3000 others.

If no "blue" colored files show up when you try a search for a file that you know is on the other machine, see the diagram about NAT on http://www.kurtm.net/gnuchowto/ If the terms and concepts of the diagram makes sense, good. If not, Ursula is so right--configuring a home network is much better done by Messenger or email.

I had trouble because what u call prefrences is actually called Options. Well I figured it out, changed the port number and now it works. Thx!
