Can't connect on Mac OS9

Hey there,

Can anyone lend a hand and help me get connected. I have read some tips from user Lord of the Rings and gave that a shot. I deleted the .limewire folder (while the program was off) and had MRJ already installed. Still nothinng. I also read the firewall information but was unable to locate any firewall on my HD. Any thoughts? Anyone with a similar problem.
Thanks for your help

How do you connect to the Internet? Do you connect through a university network or ISP? You might have to contact your network administrator or ISP to open a port so you can connect and download from the gnutella network. The port that LimeWire uses to connect is port 6346. I hope this helps solve your problem.

problem connecting on Mac OS9

I connect through an ISP with an external DSL (speedstream) modem. Can I set up the port myself? Any tips on doing that?

Thanks!

spearson December 11th, 2004 07:28 AM

komonkey, I think you will have to call up your ISP and ask them to open port 6346 so that you will be able to connect and download from the gnutella network using LimeWire. I don't think you will be able to do it yourself. I hope this helps.

komonkey you're using an Efficient(Siemens) Speedstream right. Chances are it is 'at least' semi-blocking your connection. You will need to forward a port within your modem. I can hopefully give you instructions on how to do this if you can tell us your model number. Many high speed modems have a type of internal firewall. And port 6346 is one of those they block, at least partially.

connection

I'm using an Efficient Networks Speedstream 5100. Any advice would be great. Much obliged LOTR.

Lord of the Rings December 11th, 2004 12:52 PM

2 Steps & the 1st one is the easiest:
1. Within LW: Force IP instructions & sample image

2. Port Forwarding for the Efficient Speedstream 5100 Router But you 'will need' to set up a Static IP so see the link to the Static IP guide at the top of that page. Otherwise evertime you log-on to your computer your modem will have a different ip & thus your settings will have been in vain. Don't forget to SAVE all your settings & for some modems you need to reboot them after these type of changes. You need to use Port 6346 for the port from & to.

This will hopefully fix your problems. After completion 'leave LW on for a time' to allow it to connect.

still stuck

The first step was easy but when I go to the following step...

"Enter the ip address of your router in the address bar of your browser. The routers default ip address is 192.168.254.254"

I get an error message that reads "connection failure has occured".
Is that the correct routing number? I tried to cut and paste it and type it in as well in both explorer and netscape. I also added www. & http:// in front of it and that didn't work either.
Is there another way to connect to?

Lord of the Rings December 13th, 2004 05:19 PM

Are you sure it's your router address or your computer address.

et voilą December 13th, 2004 05:42 PM

You might take a look there komonkey http://home.visi.com/support/dsl/5200/
Normally you "should" be able to access the router with that address http://192.168.254.254/
(can you connect with dialup on lw?)

Ciao

No router connection

Thanks to all for your continued assistance.

I am still not able to access my router to open a port or static ip. Again the the router # 192.168.254.254 will not connect. I down loaded the 5100 manual but it did not have any additional information.
Also, I tried connecting via my dial up 56k modem but after about 10 min, I still had no connection.
I spoke to SBC (my ISP) support who had no clue what I was talking about (obviously reading support off a monitor) and kept telling me to call apple.
Is there anything left to try?

et voilą December 14th, 2004 05:36 PM

Can you tellls us what programs are on your computer? Do you actually have NetBerrier, Norton? If LW doesn't connect with dialu-up, it might be a firewall like Netbarrier that blocks LW. (can you look at about this mac in apple menu to see what apps are running?)

Ciao

See the very bottom of of the page of this link: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/rema...8153~mode=flat Which one applies to you? Is yours the Speedstream 5100a, b, etc?

still trying

When trying to connect to LW I checked "about this computer" and their were no firewall programs running. I searched my Mac for Norton, Netbarrier, Firewall & Security and found no blocking programs.

Also, I checked out the link provide and my modem just says Speed Stream 5100. I also tried the router numbers that were listed with the various versions, b, c, and that did not work either.

Did you buy your modem thru your isp or independently? If thru your isp their customer support will know how to log into your modem. When you tried to log into your modem with any of those no.'s did you get any type of message at all? You should have got a login window unless you have it set for auto login. Surely you have a manual that came with your modem. I'd be extremely surprised if you didn't. your manual will explain how to log in & which address to use.

Hmm another issue with SBC... Komonkey should look at my posts in this thread:

Ciao

Thanks for the continued support

I tried to login (previously noted) via the instructions given in the 5100 manual. I copied this step directly from the it:

To log on to the Web interface for the first time:
1. In your Microsoft Internet Explorer
Address bar or Netscape Navigator
Location bar, enter the default router IP
address: http://192.168.254.254
The Administrative User Setup screen
displays.

The page does not come up, I get the error message (previously noted):
"connection failure has occurred" I can not get past this step,

I also spoke to both my ISP and to Efficent Support who told me the same thing (step 1.).

Perhaps the router is faulty? Not sure what else it could be if I can't log in to the address http://192.168.254.254. I also tried 192.168.0.1 and still the page does not even load, just the error message. Is there anything left to try?

Lord of the Rings January 5th, 2005 01:29 PM

I presume you've tried unplugging the modem / resetting it!? Try that. :)

Do you know how to reset it? It should be within your manual. I'm not sure how to do it on your brand of modem.

By the way, may I ask which model of mac you have? What speed, ram amount, HDD space, etc.?

Lord of the Rings January 5th, 2005 01:39 PM

You said you already have MRJ installed but was that MRJ 2.2.6 for OS 9.2.2 which all OS9 users don't necessarily have. They often only have the previous version or earlier.
