Mactella magically fills file space?

I was downloading this avi about 700 Mb and the download was interrupted by Mactella quitting.
However, when I check on the size of the partially downloaded file, it was 700Mb! The download time was not even close to 1 minute, what is going on.

When I "duplicated" or made a copy of the file, I verified that it was indeed 700Mb.
