Morpheus Breaking the GPL. Okay folks here is the story from my point of view. Morpheus release intial preview version a while ago ripping off all swabby's work on the Gnucleus Project and adding spy ect. They include the GPL doco but they forgot to release the source a few days later they released the near source. Just a few days ago Morpheus releases the preview version 1.9 I assume as sort of a beta for 2.0. Morpheus doesn't not attach the GPL there by breaking it. Morpheus doesn't release the source. A couple days later they release 1/2 the source the missing bits of course are the new bits. Today day the release a New source which nearly compiles. This source of course is not at all morpheus they changed the icons and thats about it and they expect the community to believe its the "Real" source. I personal suggest that all developers try to ban morpheus' clients from the network but that is my opion. |
I noticed that myself.. Was also nice of them not to include the resources |
Actually legally they don't that is copywrited data if you download the first version of the 1.9 source they include most of the images. |
it wouldnt be the first network morpheus was banned from if it happens tho.. Who knows where they'll leech next.. Morpheus - Stealing an opensource client near you! |
i dont care i just want my files |
who cares, morpheus is brining in a large user base all we should try and do is teach people that gnucleus is better and they should ditch morpheus... try putting a text file or html file up on gnutella that says WHY MORPHEUS SUX.tx or GNUCLEUS IS BETTER THAN MORPHEUS.txt lol, well somehow we need to convey the knowledge |
no no, you have to name it sex-porn-nasty-naked-things-you-arent-suposto-know-read-me-now.txt |

It is free and it should remain free. Those guys from Gnucleus worked hard to publish a good and free client. Then a greedy corporation named Morpheus comes and steals the code. Because most people know Morpheus but not Gnucleus they think: "Hey that app is great!" Sad world |
Gnucleus is just a temporary solution for Streamcast. Morpheus 2.0 will be a coproduction fo Streamcast and Rebol and it will probably not contain any Gnucleus code. |
Well thats a fair solution :) |
I find that hard to believe they have already been using the Gnucleus client for 3 months and that still no excuse. If I stole you artwork I stuck it in my picture frame and got money from a gallery to display it for over 3 months and then I decided to do my own artwork and chuck yours away later would you mind? |
Thats GPL. Its allowed, BUT you have to include the GPL AND include the sourcecode. But since the new version doesnt include these things its quite... |
Jeez Give them a break, they just took one in the groin from Kazaa. They are probably disorganized, working long hours, and reeling from the recent blow. Considering that they are making efforts to comply, I would just chalk it up as a low priority item. They release, then they clean up the source code and make it presentable over a few iterations. Now if this went on for months, there might be a problem. I think Morpheus is an interesting case - this is the first time a commercial entity adopted an open source product and brought with it a user base of millions. |
Easy way to tell Morph users about Gnucleus In Gnucleus and Morpheus you can send the folder/directory name with the result. I've already seen someone who put all their shared files and folders inside a root share folder called "Morpheus users - Gnucleus is Morpheus with no spyware" That way morph users will see the message in every hit. |
Someone make a song.mp3 about this while adding some comedy or nasty words and a mpg with a naked dancing girl so they will pay attention. You have to understand the IQ level of people who don't already know that morpheus is a rip off of gnucleus. If you could print this message on beer cans, that might help too. |
There are a lot of people that downloaded Morpheus because: a. They downloaded it because of the name b. They came from the old Morpheus. These people know very little of Gnutella and maybe haven't even heard of Gnucleus. Ivan "In the dark we make a brighter light" |

It's sort of like walking down a dark alley in a place you don't know. Not a smart thing to do when all the information is easy to find. |
Most Morpheus users are still hoping for the real thing which is coming in two weeks (as their website says ;-) and have no intention of using gnucleus. |
morpheus 2 was supposed to be out months ago --- about the same time they got kicked off fasttrack |

Now that I have been informed (by accident) about Gnucleus, I have already chosen to switch. This does NOT mean that my IQ have changed during the process, it simply means that most people continue to use things as long as they work for them. Morpheus still do for most people... How it is developed and wether it conformes to GPL is of no interest to the average user, I am sad to say... |
