Question Umm.. isn't this gtk-gnutella? The interface is a rip-off...

What the hell. Point out the differences, please.

Thumbs down definitely rip off of gtk-gnutella

I've been using gtk-gnutella for quite some time. When I saw napshare on freshmeat, the screenshot looked exactly like gtk-gnutella. So I downloaded, compiled, tried. It seems like a rip off of an *older* version of gtk-gnutella. Napshare doesn't allow multiple searches. Old versions of gtk-gnutella didn't either, but recent ones do.

I can find no mention of gtk-gnutella anywhere in napshare.

See the bottom of the README file, and the home page mentions it too.

gtk-gnutella has now integrated some of the improvements from napshare, but was stale for over a year, so napshare was started.

Nice thing about open source, no one is "stealing" from anyone else, just improving it.

You could say he interface of gtk-gnutella is a rip-off of the original gnutella client.

So who's the original rip off now?

Chill Dude. Run whatever you are happy with, write and contribute some code of your own. No one gets paid for developing these clients for you.

Cool Deal

It's open source, that's the whole idea.

Thumbs up

I think it would have been ok with the gtk-gnutella authors if NapShare's author didn't even mention them. Otherwise they wouldn't have GPL'd the whole thing.

Smile Yse, it's a ripoff. But that is good.

Yes, Napshare is a rip off, but Gtk-nutella is a rip off to. That was already in one of the above posts but people still complained. Being able to share code is a very good thing for open source. It helps development of more open source.

Maybe they are Windows users and don't comprehend the idea of sharing code?

One look into Napshares README and AUTHORS file:

Original Gtk-Gnutella Author: Yann Grossel

NapShare was based on the original V0.13 Gtk-Gnutella source
code, many thanks to all who improved Gtk-Gnutella. We are
still swapping code between the projects.

Hehe, yeah. I remember back when I have choosen this avatar. It should visualize that I wanna be laidback and friendly to others, but on the other hand ignoring trolls and hate. Well, with all the anger inside the Gnutella community in the past, I let me influence too much and I think I missed my goal. Posing and bitching is sometimes toooo easy when you surrounded by barbarians and trolls. I suggest to use the ignore-feature of this forum, you will wonder how many posts get filtered out.

Have fun, Moak
