Password protected preferences for adult material

Please consider adding a password option to the adult material and/or search keywords preferences. Those of us with children or those who would just rather not be exposed to all the porn would appreciate it.

mistafeesh May 30th, 2002 03:43 AM

I too would find this very helpfull indeed.
I have small kids who are very tech literate(!)
I also run a small business, and would like to allow employees access to the gnutella network without being able to view porn.
<plead>Please, please, please build it in! you know you want to.</plead>
<bribe>I'll buy limewire pro if you do!</bribe>

I too would like this feature. I have an addiction to pornography, and am not able to have limewire etc as it is too much of a temptation.

Treatid May 30th, 2002 06:26 AM

How exactly do you tell that it is porn?

All of the netnanny software and the like block a lot of legitimate software and don't block all possible porn.

It is possible to block out keywords and particular types of files under options|filter - there's even an adult content filter that you just have to tick. It isn't, however, password protected.

MamiyaOtaru May 30th, 2002 02:52 PM

precisely. I think he is asking for that checkbox to be password protected, if someone wants to uncheck it.

Taliban May 30th, 2002 03:31 PM

It's just a few lines in the source code, you'd have to change to set the adult filter to always on.

If you'd compile the source code yourself (it's less challenging, than it sounds) it wouldn't be a problem to do it.

mistafeesh June 6th, 2002 08:43 AM

I don't expect it to always be perfect - as MamiyaOtaru said I just want to be able to have that checkbox always on.

The last coding I did (apart from a smattering of HTML and Applescript) was in BBC BASIC - just how easy is it to mess with the code and recompile?

Taliban June 6th, 2002 10:03 AM

Well you will have to download a "JDK" (for free) from http://java.sun.com and you will need "ant" from http://jakarta.apache.org/.

Download the complete source code from http://www.limewire.org (you'll have to use a cvs client, further instructions on the homepage).

In the file core/limegroup/gnutella/SpamFilter.java you have to edit line 39:
Replace
boolean filterAdult=settings.getFilterAdult();
with
boolean filterAdult=true;

Compile LimeWire and create the .jar files.

aah. unfortunately, as I'm running Mac OSX, most of that stuff ain't yet available for me, or at least I can't see it on the SUN site and the ...I forgot to mention that earlier.

Hello!

A password protection function to bann and prevent any porn material to be searched accessed or viewed by a certain user/users is a function that sure would be wanted for certain people but such a function is not possible and that is because of the curse of Meta information.A porn bann filter would just bann the most evident words such as porn, lolita, sex etc but the persons/companys that do distribute porn fill their files with meta tags and words that has nothing to do with porn att all even if you just perform a search on such a innocent word such as LimeWire you would still find some porn files in the results list.

MacTerminator June 10th, 2002 05:20 PM

I can't see any harm in adding a password to the adult/word filter options if that would make worried users (especially parents) feel better.

However, in my tests, these filters (even with a wide range of words added to the filter list) are not very effective and a large number of porn hits can still get through - for example those that simply have a girl's name.

Apart from that, the reality is that most kids have very little trouble getting round any security measures that parents put in place on the computer. For example, a friend of mine's little brother (12 years old) has his doting parents convinced that he's a little angel who only uses the net to research his school projects. But in reality, when he's not kicking butt in Quake 3 or Halflife, he's taking peeks at porn sites that his friends have sent him hacked passwords for. He also has no problems leaving the hard disk squeaky-clean with trace-removing software for when mum and dad come home. So if his parents placed security restrictions on the Web Browser or P2P software, he would have no trouble at all finding and downloading unrestricted alternatives. I have to add here that his elder sibling has excercised a teeny-weeny bit of influence in this pattern of behaviour though, to his credit, he ocasionally tries to instill a little bit of responsibility.

"But my little cherubin wouldn't do anything like that!", I hear parents cry. Well....you'd know better than I.

I'll put a precompiled version of the LimeWire.jar with the adult filter enabled by default online this evening (CEST). I'll post a link here.

Taliban June 11th, 2002 01:03 PM

Okay, this is a version of LimeWire with adult filter always on. You need a working LimeWire installation to use it. Overwrite the program files of your LimeWire installation with the files contained in this zip. (LimeWire.jar, MessageBundle.properties and RunLime.jar).

This is a beta version from cvs with some of the newest features (hashing, browse host) but since the adult filter is not really very sophisticated you won't be able to download songs like "Beck - Sexx Laws" either.

This file will remain online for a day at max. After that period you'll have to search for "limewire adult filter always on" with LimeWire, and if you are lucky, you might find it.

The only way of getting around the adult filter is replacing the program files with new ones from the official installation. So make sure, the people you want to keep from downloading porn don't have writing permissions to the LimeWire.jar file (disallow writing to the whole LimeWire folder might cause problems LimeWire, it will work more or less, though).

ftp://whitedragon.dyndns.org/limewire.zip

P.S.
Don't download this for fun!

mistafeesh June 12th, 2002 03:35 AM

Awww, I missed it! :(
Would it have worked on Mac OSX?

If so, would anyone would be kind enough to email it to me at dan@oxdance.co.uk
I'd be very grateful!

Taliban June 12th, 2002 03:43 AM

it's still online, the download is a little slow, however, because I'm running limewire in the background.

Unregistered June 12th, 2002 07:01 AM

Unfortunately, it broke Limewire for me maybe its my OS (Mac OSX) - I couldn't connect to any servers or enter any searches.

But thanks for trying!

Taliban June 12th, 2002 09:27 AM

Oh, yes, that's probably one of the bugs in the current cvs code. It won't connect when the size of the gnutella.net file is 0 bytes. Try using a new gnutella.net file (copy it into the same folder as the rest of the files) you can get it here:

ftp://whitedragon.dyndns.org/gnutella.net

(If it really didn't work on MacOSX it wouldn't even start. For almost everything else, there is a workaround. )

mistafeesh June 13th, 2002 01:52 AM

Yay - that did the trick. Thanks a LOT Taliban and Gregorio (who emailed me the file I couldn't DL)
PS yes, that last post was me too - I just forgot to put my name!

Taliban June 13th, 2002 03:46 AM

Taliban and Gregorio are one and the same person.

Password protect or always on?

Hello All:

I know this string is pretty ancient, but I would really like to know if anyone has the patch to turn the adult filter always on for Mac OS X users. It would really solve a lot of problems for me. I can't seem to find it on Limewire.

Thanks.

Lord of the Rings December 15th, 2004 02:43 PM

Another Mac User: 3 posts on same topic. See here if you're using OSX: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=31140 So you can make LW read only. You can set up log in for your kids to only have minimal permissions.

Limewire Audlt Filter Always On (LimewireFAO)

I have completed a version of limewire with the adult filter always on. It is pretty much full proof. There are ways around it but no if you are running content barrier on your mac and have all of the gnutella download pages blocked. Also, you would need to keep your kids from bringing files home from a friends computer at school.

You can't download ANY videos or pictures. You can't download ANY gnutella software. The only thing it will download is music, documents, and programs. Please keep in mind that I am a complete beginner and I have NO idea what I am doing. If something goes wrong with the program, I do NOT provide technical support, and I probably couldn't help you anyway.

It uses terminal to run, so if you close terminal you will close limewire. Anyone who knows how to convert this to a working mac .app file, please feel free to do so and email me to let me know you did it so I can use it:o)

If you would like a copy of the file please email me at limewirefao@suscom.net
