To LimeWire developer!Suggestions!

Hello!

So what could be missing in the already great LW application?hmmm....?

Here are some features that I would like to see in a future revision:

-Upload chat capabilitys-
the ability to engage and enable a chat with someone that are currently uploading a file from me.

-Automatic re search and download capabilitys-

If I really want a file badly but it is very rare and hard to find I would like that LW had the capability to search and download it for me automatically.Such a function could ofcourse increase the net congestion and clog the network so therefore it could be limited to perform searches about once every 5 minutes or so.Example:

I am searching for a rare mp3 file and I could not find it and also do not have the time to keep searching for it right now so I would like to have the ability to configure LW to continue searching using the same search phrase over and over again about once every 5 minutes automatically and once it find a file with a file name that matches my query/search phrase exactly it should automatically attempt to download the file until it gets it.This would really be a great feature.

-Host counter-

In eralier versions of LW you could see the number of hosts that you where connected to next to the connect/disconnect button I would like to have this function back since it helps me see if I have a good connection or not.

Buddy list-

The ability for true friends to share files directly with each other kind of like a ICQ feature. This means that If I have a person in my buddy list and he for example has made a great image for me that he wants to send to me but not trough e-mail.He could put it up on Gnutella for me to download and that person/IP should have higher priority then others so that I would have higher chance of downloading it and also get a better download speed.I do not know if such a function is possible to make but maybe it is.

Hope That You Liked my Suggestions!

Re-Search (Requery) is already implemented as default for all files you try to download. Unfortunately, it only issues a new search once every 45 minutes (One search every 45 mins - not one search per file every 45 mins). Yes - this is to avoid congestion.

But - given time, LimeWire will keep looking for new hosts for the files in your download list.

I'd suggest that for person to person file transfer you would be better off with a dedicated program rather than try to stretch LimeWire/gnutella to be anything other than a p2p network.

FTP servers and clients are widely available and I believe that many of the ICQ/netmeeting style of programs support file transfer.

Hej, Joakim.........

For what I believe you are referring to with "person to person" file transfers, it is very simple to do now with both BearShare and Gnucleus. It is called Direct Connecting.
I am sorry, but I am not familiar enough with LimeWire, after version 1.8, to make any comments..... Although, I am sure it was possible in the older versions of LW.
Direct Connecting is very simple. If you wish more info, send me a PM. I have not yet discussed with anyone here as to whether or not they would like to see a thread on the subject of Direct Connecting.

Now we can wait to see who comes in here with a reply declaring that Direct Connecting is harmful to the Network.
There are usually a few who do not understand and have real emotional problems about Direct Connects! :p

I'm using the latest Gnucleus version and I've never heard about Direct Connecting. Is it currently CVS only? I would like a thread about this, it sounds interesting though i don't have any clue what it could be ;-)

Hello!

I think that you have missinterpreted my request for a re-search function.I already know about the Requery sent function. What I meant was kind of a intervall search function which would work like this:
Example:
You do a search with following term:

Britney Spears-Stronger

And you get a lot of results in the search but not that exact song was found. But I am in a hurry and do not have time right now to do another search so I would like to configure LW to do the search and download for me automatically. The function could work something like this.I click Control(Or Command on a Mac) and then the mouse button somewhere in the search area field or on the search tab and a contextual menu would appear(this function already exists in LW) but I would like to have a new field and function to this menu and that is something called Intervall search when I select that option I would like LW to perform the exact same search for me once every 5 minutes and if it found a result that matched my query letter by letter then It would automatically attempt a download of that file for me so the next time I show up in front of my computer I would have already gotten that file and can listen to it.This was just an example but that is the function I wanted.

As far as Direct connections is concerned I would not mind if that was possible over Gnutella.I personally hate ICQ and would never use it.LW developers should continue to expand it's capacity so that we do not have to use not so practical FTP servers or messenger programs.

Hej Ursula!

So you speak a little Swedish intressting could you possibly be the bureau director of the Swedish consumer office Konsument Verket who's name is also Ursula:p

I do not know about Bearshare since but as far as Gnucleus is concerned I do not think it has a direct connect person to person function but ofcourse since I am not using it I do not really know.I will send you a PM regarding Direct Connect's.

For general information

Just for a quick note now, it is very simple to do Direct Connections in both Gnucleus and BearShare. All you need is the other person(s)' address. A few other details apply, but it is very simple. Using IM during at least the start of a Direct connect is almost essential unless you can work to a very exact schedule.
I will discuss with others here about starting a thread on doing Direct connects.
Not sure where it should go.
But certainly not here.
I would be interested in any comments from LimeWire users about the possibilities now of doing Direct connects and any experience they may have.
