Implementing A Buddylist

Is it possible to give the clients an Onlinenumber to create a buddylist of friends with good media and a list of chatfriends ???

Buddylist needed

Hi
seeing Shareaza developing quite well and gnucleus implementing not only edonkey-links, but also a bridge to the whole network (http://www.c0re.net/gnuforum/viewtopic.php?p=14666),

I think as a proud user of limewire a buddylist is really needed.

When do we can await such a feature ? I think that implementing edonkeylinks should be done later, so that we have as the first client the buddylist-specifications implemented.

Is anyone going to develop this before christmas ?

?

Definatly

Instead of numbers it probably would be better if we could have Usernames(more permanent ones than kazaa). That would make this program a lot better.I'm not sure if everyone will agree to this but it would suck if it had anything more than Limewire compadibility b/c of all the features of example AIM you wouldnt have. But yea this would be awsome ta implemnt inta limewire.

It's possible but not very simply. Many users have dynamic IPs and since there is no central server you would not be informed about anybody else's online status.

One way to solve this could be a distributed hash table which is in the works but it's far away from working actually. Another way could be some kind of chat meshes depending on servent IDs but I figure that would either cause a lot of traffic or it wouldn't be very reliable.

So here's maybe a dumb question, but it's something that's bugging me and I can't figure out despite all my searching. Is there simply no way to look up another user directly in order to share files with each other?

Just today I had an issue with a girl that I was chatting with and we were trying to share some great files. But we couldn't find any of each other's files to download, and so we couldn't do the browse host thing to look at each other's complete libraries. We chatted for at least two hours and then there was no way to keep track of each other for the future aside from swapping email addresses. It was so frustrating! Plus, we didn't get the files shared!

Thanks for any help that anyone might be willing to give me! I sincerely hope I didn't just repeat the same question from some other thread because I know how people (including me) hate that. It's impossible to find an answer with thousands of messages that just repeat each other! So I hope I didn't commit the same crime here, but I just didn't have any more hours to devote to looking around!

Correct. However I it would be possible to create a chat system that allows people to open channels where you can chat with others and see a list of nicknames & IPs...

I've been thinking about that. You could easily set up a distributed chat system that would be advertised on gnutella via pongs. - Maybe I'll do that in my christmas vacancies.

It should be possible to browse a user via chat window, if someone at LimeWire only added a browse button.

I'd be happy with the ability to store the IP address of a good source, and then come back to that source to either chat with them or browse files.

Provide the ability to key in IP address so that peer to peer inside subnets could be used. For example:
- Two PCs are on a network using DHCP.
- Both users can determine their IP addresses.
- If at least one user can key in the IP address of the other PC, then that user could connect and browse.

Great benefit for informal file sharing when an ftp server is not available or when users do not want to incur the double time penalty of uploading to a server from the "pitcher" then downloading from the server on the receiving (catcher) computer.

Provide simple list of saved links, with 2 fields: IP address and Comments.
Display online status and provide link to browse host and, maybe, chat.

1) most of the IPs are dynamic
2) not all hosts accept incoming connections
3) it's not possible for LimeWire to determine whether your IP is dynamic or not.
4) You don't even know when a gnutella client is running on a specific host.

So in most of the cases your attempt to browse a host or to chat with it will fail because of 1 - 4.

1) most of the IPs are dynamic

There is the possibility to use the hash of the client

2) not all hosts accept incoming connections

The gdf can find a common protocol !

3) it's not possible for LimeWire to determine whether your IP is dynamic or not.

see 1

4) You don't even know when a gnutella client is running on a specific host.

see 1

So i believe if you can find a unique file on the net, than you can find also a buddy.

Instant messaging is a thing the users want !
