the most useful feature could be allowing users to edit filters... currently as I'm sure you know durning a search your results will show a load of files with 851.7kb as the file size this as we know is nothing but a virus file and it has been discussed in the forms for some time..

also a filter with the option - fike must be greater than or less than (user enters number in kb or mb) -- would make a real differance

the addition of a size filter would eliminate 75% of bogus files.. or is the offical position on this "we don't care" or "we know we are the ones putting the virus out and are secretly being paid by software and record companies"

I second that one. I've just purchased Limewire Pro after my Bshare lease expired and the filters in Bshare were much better for specifying what files I want to see.
Not much else I could complain about other than to see this addition.

Somethings are just worth repeating. This is one of them. And some rules just have to be broken to accomplish anything. So be it. If LW want people to shut up about it, then perhaps LW can state their official position on the topic and be done with it. I'll go with option #2. I believe LW has conspired with the RIAA. Even heard rumor that they keep records on the IP's of people who post in forums like this. I mean there's just too much lack of evidence, outspoken word from LW officials about why every search comes up with spam, virus's and the recording of people's IP addresses in forums like this one. Nothing is being done about it. But newer, less useful versions keep coming out, without much discernable improvement to be talked about. Though I also agree with #1 as well, they don't care. They don't even bother to filter out they're own pro version from limewire basic! :rolleyes: As I see it, LW tries to improve upon their previous versions as long as it doesn't interfere with RIAA's or money interests. I guess if the big business of food industry can have secret laboratories that produce chemicals that make people fat and addicted to food to exploit customers for profit then why wouldn't LW do the same thing and exploit paying customers to do dirty work like deliberately and ignorantly share virus's and market adds (that I believe are deceptive for other purposes) all in the name of profit. Why hasn't LW been shut down then for either? Where there any answers (excuses) to this?

The RIAA is trying to shut down LW (and others), and attempting to make them responsible for the content shared.

from what I've seen LW officials can't make any public statements since the SCOTUS Grokster decision without considering how the RIAA lawyers will use them.

I don't think that improving the software or opening it for the end user to edit adjust the software make the statement of legal or illegal use of the software

sharing files and the tools that search for and assist is downloading files is nothing more than a tool ... you can use google to find files by type (mp3, avi, pdf) and as for downloading such you need nothing other than the same web browser used to surf the web

peer to peer networking is a part of networking itself, if files and the data in the files were not sharable and editable you have television... and lets face this fact, the world is not going to go backwards and accept a broadcast of ideas and not be able to share their own

I understand the point of the record and movie companies, as a producer of music and video myself of course I don't want my work stolen or do I condone stealing of work

but access to files is not a crime... you can use yahoo to look up how to made a bomb, or msn to search for chemical supplies..

tools such as limewire give small independant producer a way to get seen, at that point the work will stand on its own

so all that said... to ignoor a fault - and this is a fault, there is no possible way to not see this huge hole --

is to say Limewire is activly partisapation in spreading virus's and spyware by taking advantage of the novice computer user

-- and thats is a big steaming load to drop on the LW plate... , if McDononlds was told the meat was only a little bad so only children would get sick from it....

currently LW is king of the peer to peer, I don't know what that means in hard dollars, I would think that any major movie corp, of big software company could just write a check and buy it.. but that would still not stop file sharing...

and the cassette tape didn't put the music biz on poor street, recordable cd's was not the end of software companies - the people in power always fear change, tommarrows winners embrace change and are the first to adopt it.

I'm pretty sure I have asked this question to the LW staff in the past and the same as when I posted it here I also sent it to the staff...

so by saying nothing that pretty much says it all... the next step is at least a formal position on why this topic is ignored or it might be time to let the dogs or war fight....

now here is a question... I will use an example - if I found a box on the sidewalk and pick it up and take it into my house, I have broken no laws, if I get a phone call later that night and I am told please don't open the box it has something illegal in it... I now being informed must take action or be deemed a criminal and face the music

so can LW being informed that by not correcting a known weakness, and not jamming warning messages into the face of novice users be responsible for spreading knowingly spreading computer virus's -- with the passing of the Homeland Act this is a very serious crime and could get big and ugly

now since part of the deal when you buy pro is email support - I figure they will answer since the last thing they would like to see is a pissing match with mastercard over non-delivered services


(BTW Mastercard is by far the only way to shop online, your always right, their always wrong and since Mastercard would love to have ANY excuse to jack the client rates or drop them you alway get some sort of responce)

I downloaded the 851.7kb virus to see which one it was and did a little investigating. It was obviously designed to disable P2P programs as they are the targets of this virus.

Another reason why I don't think Limewire states anything directly about this but rather just starts a forum of people to think they know what's going on will deter their legal battles against paying customers I think is also what's going on.

I looked all over Limewires' website and found nothing of scheduled improvements upon their program. If there is, let me know.

Any spam filter I have ever seen has never worked as well as a little common since. Lets see what was the fact I just read O yes there are 250 viruses being written every month and a unknown number of spam files.

Now lets see I am no program writer but if I wanted to get my spyware or virus spread and I new that apps were using size filters. I think I would just make them the size of common files.

Lets think how I might do that, don't know if it would work but lets say I wrote a file that is 857.1 Kb in size and I wanted to make it bigger humph what if I just held down the AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA not to hard to make a file any size you want is it. Lets say I make this file in the Kb to Kb range I just effectively made a file the same size as most music files and if you filter it out you have blocked allot of usable files.

The only way of effectively filtering spam and viruses is if there is a server that contains all known good files and hashes users files and blocks all files that don't match. And we all know that isn't the way the network works.

The problem here is that allot of people are lazy and don't check there files. I do not know that a code could be written into LimeWire that if you clicked on a file to download it, it would first take you to Bitzi and you could check the file. But most people would probably whine about it. It would be an effective way to reduce the number of bad files though.

One other thing I see in this thread is allot of paranoia it seems some of you must have someone to blame for everything that happens in life. People find it allot easier to blame someone else for there problems than accept responsibility for there actions.

As far as who is writing the viruses and spreading them who knows and who really cares they are a part of life. And if you take the time to do the things you are supposed to you can avoid most of them. I my entire time on P2P networks I have gotten 1 virus unintentionally.That has been many years of file sharing and I am not saying I won't get another but the odds are in my favor because I do take the necessary steps to try and prevent it.

What a crock of S**T you speak of evidence and yet spread rumors. I see no evidence to back up you claims, Here lets start another one LimeWire is really the RIAA and we are all busted and fined $10,000.00 per file. People can say or wright anything they want it doesn't mean it is true. Spreading rumors is about the most irresponsible thing a person can do.

Nothing wrong with developing a theory for conversation sake is there? I didn't say it was true. I figured some people would take offense to it, but that's not my problem. :cool:

Hey Grandpa (and photohammer)--thought you'd be interested to know that since the CVS machine got up and running again, it looks like there is some work on a spamfilter is being committed. If the server is up, you can see the submissions at https://www.limewire.org/fisheye/changelog/limecvs/

I can't read code, but guess this means a user defined filter is not as far away as I would have guessed.
