Solution to Child Porn, Viruses, Trojan Horses, and Other Files

It angers me when I download a file and go to scan it with my Antivirus program and find it Riddled with all sorts of Spyware, Viruses, and Other damaging stuff. Or when you download a video just to find out it has kids being forced to do stuff that no child should ever be forced to do! So, I propose an idea which hopefully will help us enjoy a error free p2p program.

Why can't we Vote off files!? The people that use Limewire -and correctly at that- Should have the option to vote off files! Every user of Limewire will sign-up and become a -for lack of better words "Moderator" Looking up files and Voting them off the Servers! let me explain the process, lets say for example there is a file called:

"Little girl in a Pink Dress.mpg"

"X" amount of Registered members with Limewire have downloaded and found out that this file contains "Child Porn" they have voted that the file needs to be removed and the IP address Banned Permantly along with their Account.

But, in order for this to work we need to make sure there is a way to make sure that Users are not just Voting off "Good" files just to be a Jack***, we can make it so there has to be a certain amount of Users Vote in order to have it kicked off and the User banned. I understand that people will find out a way to get around this system but we need to try, for our Childrens sake lets work this in some how!

It sure as hell would take alot of programming! Though!

That's a great idea, which could work really well. As for people voting off good people and using the system against them, wouldn't the administrators be able to check porn posts of these users before blocking them?

Now explain exactly how the file is going to be removed and Banned Permanently. There are no servers on the Gnutella net just users like you and myself. In other words there are around 2,000,000 servers on the Gnutella net. And you are one of them. Perhaps you need to do some reading on the Gnutella net. Then come up with a workable solution.

ok heres some solutions in adressing IP's if we blocked all ip's that had or shared any of these files we ourselves could be blocked if we got the file accidentally since there are no servers involved in this we need to look at our individual programs, they could be modified to exclude these files from showing up in our searches (hopfully not excluding others) it would take some time and help from all of us to identify these files and i'm not only talking about the child porn this could work for all files unwanted by the majority of users for instance i have been getting alot of virus containing files and some that are just simply viruses by another name we would need somewhere to report these files in time when enough of them have been identified and sorted an update could be sent out having these files for whomever is sending them pourposly would be pointless and they would not even come through on our searches it is possible just like a list of peers being updated and whatnot.

solution?

if there are over 2 million users, and we all blocked each other, that would be funny. kind of like ignoring yourself in yahoo chat, before they made it so you couldn't do that anymore.

the best way to not receive stuff like that is to carefully pick your search terms. sorry, but if you're searching for "little girl in a pink dress," it doesn't take a genius to figure out what you're going to get. and for viruses? by scanning files & all, you're doing the best you can. there's always going to be some *insert favorite curse word/insult here* that can't act right. if you don't like what you end up with, delete it & try again.

however. the nice thing about the internet is you can turn the computer off & walk away. if you start to take it too personally, seriously, etc., then it's probably time to do just that.

I have found a sneeky way round this i know this is going to sound a bit evil but so what go on browse host i.e. child porn look what documents they have and see if theres any hotmail or e-mail or any thing you could use as "evidence" and report them to:-

http://www.iwf.org.uk/

with a picture of there e-mail or there ip adress might get this sort of thing banned from LIMEWIRE which apart from the viruses and child porn is an excellent network.

Sometimes this won't work cos they are shielded tho.But sometimes there not.

Terryt

A web site you found is very good and a starting point for reporting some online shenanigans in the UK.

It is just a pity that we do not have a central law enforcement point as they do in the US. This, I feel, is because we still have too many "backward looking" autocrats in positions of authority.

It overwhelms me just to know how easily obtainable this filth is...

I'm new to Limewire & Forum. Grandpa's insite on no central sever was most helpfull. My complaint is about the amount of time wasted downloading a movie only to find out it has no sound, is a test pattern, has subtitles or has more skips/ hesitations in it than an NFL game does, for commercials. Why do people do this to fellow members ? First off label it properly & if it's good put it here. If it's S***, put it in the toilet. Stop wasting fellow members time.
Just a Nit

Use Bitzi lookup & also try previewing the file as you're downlding & also make sure you have a player with all up to date codecs or in-built codecs & is reliable & you will be safe from this type of thing. 1. How to use Bitzi Web Lookup, & 2. CODECs list and alternate players for Movies. It's a bit silly waiting days for a video to downld & not having even checked it out before you finish downlding it or research it via bitzi before you begin downlding it.

Regarding trash files

Seeing junk on limewire is a common occurance. I have seen what looked like child porno from title and what i know is virus ridden. Unfortunately they also have a high user number against them. Most people dont know or understand what is held on their hard drives. At the first sign of a malicious file I delete it from my hard drive so that it cannot be shared.

In searches I see obvious child porn even when looking for some songs. I tut tut at these and never download them. Yes a reporting system is needed to prevent these useless files showing up.

I immediately junk them, this can be reported back to limewire and high hits can be picked up and stopped. Unfortunately this takes peoplehours to accomplish, trustees should be set up to report the obvious and junking used to find the rest.

Limewire has to establish where in the market it is going to focus. Yes I have downloaded some porn and I have found that my uploads are mainly (90%) porno related.

My main reason for using P2P is to download songs and old applications. In moments of madness I will download the odd occasional porno file (adult). I have paid for pro and find that I am not as satisfied as I could be. Not being able to post on forums is a definate down for me.

I will continue to reply understanding why you are doing this. I will earn my respect on this forum as I have done on others.

The issue in this thread is not porn. It's child porn & viruses. If you want to downld porn, go for it. People come to the forums suggesting the network should be policed. "But by whose definition?" I don't think we need policing. Just education.

Perhaps LW should come with a manual or hints pdf for people to get tips before they start using LW.

And as far as banning ip's goes, as already stated, some people have downlded such material by mistake. And they might not check their shares for some time which means they may even have more than one without immediately realising. If everybody starts banning ip's then they may find themselves already banned by a great many people & find they can't downld everything they want to. Catch 22 ... vicious circle!

One Simple Precaution

I've only had limewire a little while and have made a few silly mistakes getting started. One thing I've learned is to simply check the size of the file to see if it's consistent with what it is supposed to be.

Recently, downloaded I carelessly downloaded an mp3 which turned out to be only about 300k instead of about 3000k. Turned out to be some bloody audio advert for something. (I don't know what. It didn't get played long enough.)
