Why not filter the obvious trojans/virii???

Why can't Limewire filter the obvious? No matter what search term you enter, there will always be at least 3 returns, one an MP3 file of 5,611Kb, another of 3,411Kb and a Zip file of 96kb. Try it, type anything, any random letters into the search and it will show up as an mp3.

If you aren't paying attention and tag any of these files, they are all infected with various trojans, mostly smitfraud variants.

Since the people doing this always show 4 stars and t3 or greater, as well as 50+ sources, they probably get downloaded a lot. Now, unless LimeWire themselves are doing this, some users have found a way to take a live search term and rename their trojan to that on the fly. I suggest limewire simply because it's *always* the 1st item found on any search.

It does no good to tag them a junk, they show up anyway. The junk filters seem to miss these files every time... wonder how that happens???

As you'll see, this is a common problem. Great info here: downloading "girl has shaking ..." in every search

Instead of awaiting answers, you can get a lot of info by searching this forum. Chances are, any problem you have with LW has also plagued others, and the threads on a subject often include solutions from multiple sources. The forum moderators do a good job keeping things together. Indeed, the above link is to the post that was just before yours. Coulda saved you 4 hrs. Anyway, welcome to the forum!

I already read that thread. Adding *.mp3 to the kill filter sort of defeats the purpose of the entire network, don't you think? There may be a few other reasons folks use P2P but not many.

I've seen the "..girl has..." show up quite a few times but not near as often as the files I listed. They show up each and every time.

I'd quit using any P2P software for several years for this very reason.

When the record companies started releasing mislabeled versions of popular songs that was bad enough. Now we have morons keeping the computer repair shops in business cleaning trojans that should have been blocked in the 1st place.

I've not had to spend any money as I keep my AV updated and I do check each file before placing it in the downloadable directories. Pain in the butt but necessary to protect myself and (hopefully) others.

I blocked 'orgasm'; works perfectly.

If you quit using P2P because of these fake files, then the RIAA has won again. And they'll continue to use any tactic that they find successful. Yeah, it's annoying to have to check each file, but it beats having to pay.
