Unhappy Safety. . .

Ok, so I am kind of paranoid about getting a virus or a bad download or something off of a shareware program.

I have had a windows pc for a while and have always used soulseek without much problem as far as I can tell. That computer has become kinda weird though.

Now I'm on a mac and I'm loving it. I don't want to risk polluting it. What I'm wondering, I know this program is free of adware/spyware, but what other risks are involved in file sharing networks, other than legal ones of course. I mean could I severely mess up my mac or anything?

I'm on the verge of just buckling down and going eMusic but I don't think I could stand limited downloads. . .

Thanks in advance for any answers on this relatively vague and probably overdone topic.

Scott

These forums aren't very active. . .

Anyway, I downloaded Phex! Seems to be working great. The download was quick and painless.

I'm very sorry for my lackign answers. I work by subscribing to forums, and somehow I forgot to subscribe to this most important of our boards...

Anyway: When you download anything from a filesharing network to your PC, you should always run it through an anti virus program before opening it.

Since you're on a Mac now, you might have to worry more about M$-Office macros (if you have M$-Office) than about other types of vira, since MacOSX is about as safe as GNU/Linux when it comes to vira.

Still it won't hurt to get a free virus scanner to check files before you open them.

While I still used Macs (till MacOS 10.3) I never worried too much, sicne Macs aren't a major target for virus authors.

Welcome to Phex and happy sharing!
