arne_bab is a great assister to others; your light through the dark tunnel

Gimp isn't as newbie friendly as Photoshop, but it gives great flexibility and isn't far from Photoshop feature wise.

As free alternative for any vector based drawing tool you can use inkscape (Inkscape. Draw Freely.) - I use it with a wacom tablett and it works great! (but I'm just a hobbyist)
