Looks like I can't get phex + I'm sad When l click on phex for OS X, the cursor turns from an arrow into a vertical line, indicating that it's not possible for me to download the fox. Really want it- HELP? :(. Of course am using a Mac running Leopard, OS X. Arne, is there any way? |
There is already a thread dealing about your download problems... no need to open a new one... Try to download directly using sourceforge: SourceForge.net: Files Try selecting a different mirror in case the auto selected mirror fails. Try using a different browser. Make sure you have no security configuration or software preventing you from downloading. I can assure you there is nothing wrong with the download. Try using a friends computer for the download if everything else fails.. |
Thanks, Gregor! Will try your link- can't use another machine- l'm older and have some health issues which prevent going out. The ccomputer has been used by 2 people before me. l hope that isn't the problem. l'm getting a new one (l hope) later this year though...l just heard of you, from a friend, today! :o |
Sorry about the duplicate new thread, didn't read enough. I d/led phex, all thanks to tou, now she's on my desktop-how to get her into applications? Sorry, I'm a 60 yr. old newbie, not only at phex, but at computers- but l learn fast. Thank you for your last reply and your help! |
Just double click it to start it - if you want it in applications, just drag and drop it there with the mouse. Happy sharing! |
Thank you, Arne! You make simple, clear explanations, which are very appreciated by the newbie AND I have been reading the wiki and other technical info- and I see much how you, the developers, and guiding spirits have done. |
3 Attachment(s) In Finder, choose Go menu & select Applications. Drag & drop Phex program or Phex folder into the Applications folder. |
VERY sorry to say this Phex, sadly, hasn't worked for me. l read all of Arne's introductions and tried to start bu never got any files. lnsead, phex took over my computer and wouldn't respond, my cursor turned into a spinning ball + when l tried restart, phex caceled it, so tried to to force-quit it STILL wouldn't respond, so in duress, l pressed 'power' for about 2 minutes- and when the computer didn't shut down and phex still had control, l called a few technicians, one after another. Finally, l severed connection to the Internet and THEN was able to restart. Out of respect and gratitude for all the kindness you and Arne have given me, l didn't post this in the forum, but in a PM to you...WHAT happened? Needless to say, phex is not in my future plans. Macs dont do this, supposedly, and this one has always been fine. |
:laugh_2: |
Ouch... I'm sorry that Phex froze your Mac! There's been a bug which causes freezing on very few configurations (I only knew it from Windows) for a long time, but I never managed to track it down :( Having to disconnect the Internet suggests that it somehow gets in conflict with some routers or such. Could you post your type of router - how do you connect to the Internet? Besides: These forums are intended to offer help, so please just post problems (in constructive language), then others can find your post when they might have the same problems (and we can add "(fixed)" to the topic, when the problem's solved - something I should have done all along...). |
Phex is a Java application, this means Phex runs inside a Java virtual machine (VM) on your computer. This is some kind of sandbox. Every access of Phex out of this sandbox into your system is strictly controlled and done through this VM. This means Phex alone should not be able to do anything that could make your system crash. A clear Phex bug would be if Phex causes very high CPU utilization, which makes your system very slow and almost not responding anymore. Or Phex could just stop working, it hangs and shows just a gray window, or just disappears. Though a system crash could still happens from time to time or from system to system, but most of the time it is related to a problem of the VM or the system Phex is running on. Phex did something, which might not even be a bug, that causes the VM or the system to go into a state that might lead to crashing your system. Sometimes it might be a VM bug, sometimes it might be a bug of a hardware driver or maybe even a system bug. Since they are not directly Phex related, these problems are very hard to reproduce or to track down. Also they usually only appear in very specific situations not always limited to just one process. Most of the time problems are related to network issues. Phex, like every other P2P app, puts a high burden on every network related component. Sometimes an update of the Java VM helps, sometimes a driver update helps. I don't know how these are published and available on OSX systems though. Sometimes it helps to tune down network use. So the next thing I would recommend you to do is update Java and hardware drivers if possible. The next time you see this crash check if your system stops responding because of high CPU (possible Phex bug) or because of a real system crash. Have you changed anything of the Phex default configurations? As a beginner I would not recommend you to change very much there. |
not finding adequate video when i type in keywords. what other file sharing sites are out there |
i am currently downloading phex to give it a try |
Gnutella is not a 'site' ! Gnutella is a network of p2p (peer to peer; sharing from person to person). So when you do a search you are finding files shared by people like yourself, perhaps even your next door neighbour or person across town. Just be wary of Spam. Virus thread: Typical virus spam file sizes - Make a note of them (click on blue link to see) Phex has a size filter to apply to search results so you can filter out anything less than a certain size for videos. Most but not all video movies will be above 500 MB in size. :) |
