When I download the source from CVS, which tag/branch should I use to get the newest version? I tried prod-233-java118, but the compiled limewire states that it is only version 2.3.1.

Try the standard branch, it usually works.
I believe the prod-233-java118 branch is the one for Macs, since MacOS is the only plattform I know that doesn't support java131 by now.
